1997 Chevy Cavalier with automatic shifter not working

I have a 1997 Chevy Cavalier with automatic transmission. The shifter is not working it just slides from Park to drive and does not shift it into gear. I checked under the hood and the lever does move when the shifter is moved, but the end of the lever that is connected to the gears is broken. What is this part called and can it be fixed?

My 1997 Chevy Cavalier automatic transmission is stuck in neutral and the shifter just glides from park, won't engage in any gears.

If the shift handle moves extremely freely (more than normal), changes are that the shift cable has become disconnected from the shift lever. This would explain the indicator not moving out of neutral.
You will need to access the shift lever by removing the console cover. Once you access the shifter check the cable connection to the level. If the cable is broken, it will need replacement. If the cable clip has broken or fallen off, it will need to be reattached.

My 1997 Chevy Cavalier gear shifter is really stiff going into each gear, why?

If it's an automatic transmission....
Try a SMALL amount of light oil on the transmission shift selector on the transmission. (follow the cable in the engine compartment down to the transmission) If its covered in mud and dirt, clean it off with water. Also try oiling the same cable internally.
