Question about 1992 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

My wife has a 92 Cavalier Z24. Every time it looses power (battery dead or disconnected for repair) it will not idle after. She has taken it to a local mechanic ( who is no longer in buisness) to get it reprogramed so it would idle. do you know if the computer can be reset without taking it to a dealership? It cranks and runs fine. It will just not idle. Thanks, Terry

My sons car did the same thing, no idle after power loss, it took a few drive cycles for it to reprogram itself, i suspect you have the same problem, and i never found another cure

Rough idle on 1999 chevy cavalier z24

Check for vacuum leaks. Spray some carb cleaner or WD40 around the intake manifold, trottle body and any vacuum lines. Check for loose connections on engine wiring harness (Maybe you disconnected a sensor, and forgot to re-attach it?).

it sounds to me that the sensor your talking about is the camshaft positioning sensor. It regulates how much fuel you get to your engine, so that is also why you have the fuel smell as well.

Idle and stalling

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Z24 running rough and stalling

Try cleaning the inside of the MAF sensor, the throttle valve and the idle speed control valve, then disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and drive for a day or two, this should correct the problem or make it better.

It sounds like you may have a broken exhaust valve spring, although, like you have found out problems like this can be very hard to diagnose, but anyone with a compression tester and couple other tools could find out if this is the case. Hope this gives you another idea where to look.
