Did the battery get installed polarity reversed? If so, it will have damaged the alternator, the engine computer and about every polarity sensitive electronic component in the entire car, plus many of the fuses. Things like motors, mechanical relays, fuel injectors, some ignition components will stand a better chance of survival. You may get to know your local auto wrecking yard employees very well. Good luck!

First check and make sure the cables are attached to the correct posts. positive to positive and neg to neg. If so, make sure the battery is charged. Even new batteries can be defective. Try jumping it with a booster box or jumper cables. Check your main fuse. During installation, if the cables crossed it could have popped your fuse. Good luck

Sounds like a wiring issue. You may have crossed the wires going to the solenoid. This would account for both the sparks and smoke. Be careful, you can blow up a battery if you have wires reversed. Double check the battery cables to ensure they too are not crossed.

This sound like a more common issue than we in the mr2 community would like to see. The cars are old and the ground wires tend to wear out. But normally the gas pedal cable becomes the place were it grounds out and start a fire. get a cheap ground wire kit for the engine compartment as well as put a few on the battery. Also check existing ground wires. Hope this helps!

My mustang is smoking and making a screeching sound.

You have a Bad Belt Tensioner and will need a new one and Possibly a new Belt. Have the Alternator Checked also. It could have gone Bad during these Problems. If the Tensioner is Not keeping the Belt very Tight it will not allow the Alt. To charge the Battery and it will drain very fast.
