Most likely the linkage to the latch itself has come off or is damaged. You would have to remove the cover to the latch and operate it directly ( not easy to do with door closed)

i have the same problem. I just got it looked at this morning at the dealer and they said the hatchback latch is binded. they would have to order a new part. total cost was close to $400. I passed on that, and am going to get it looked at by a shop for a better price.

Systematically cut it out with a sawzall reciprocating saw.
Cut the post that the latch attaches to when closed, if you can get at it with the blade.
Then, replace the post.
May need a long prybar to open if, simply stuck, while operating the opening button or lever.
Good luck with this replacement of the tail gate.
