Question about 1998 Ford Contour

1 Answer

Trying to change oil filter on 1998 Ford Contour. Is there a special way to take off because the filter is right above frame and doesn't fit through the frame and radiator. The old filter is the same size and for the life in me don't know how they even put it in.

I'd seen it don on a vehicle hoist.. mechanic reached straight up from underneath and simply unscrewed it and pulled it out almost straight downwards..

I want to change the oil in a 1998 Ford Contour SVT. I know the jack points that are to be used for changing a tire, but that doesn't do it for me, as I only have one jack and no jackstands (yet). The...

Lift the car on the side you need to work by using the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under the Ford near the jacking point and raise it so the jack stand can be placed under the frame.

Hope this helps.

I just bought a 1998 Ford Contour doesn't want to turn over. Has plenty of gas. I had a friend look at it and there is gas in the oil.

Sounds like you have HYDROLOCKED your motor. Either drain the oil, and put fresh in it and try to crank it. OR you will have to buy a new motor. :( Hope this helps, James Booth

What is the simplest way to change a fuel filter on a 1998 ford contour

buy fuel filter go under car on driverside look up about mid car there should be a black cylinder attached to the fuel line you will need a standard screwdriver pliers if you have more than one kind great bring 3. and maybe an 8 mm socket(screwdriver slotted so 8 is only maybe) if the hose has a pressure fitting then you will need a 17 mm open end wrench and a 14 im only guessing its been a while since ive done one on a ford ive done them on three generations of tarus 2 rangers a contour long story short they where all different cant say if a previous owner changed the housing or ford just likes to keep us guessing. but its real easy 10 min job with clean up time if you have a little toolbox just bring it lift the car a couple inches just enough to slide under comfortably wheel lift should not be necessary. be sure to lay your spare tire under the drivers door frame for safty better ruin the spare rim than break a rib or nose goodluck

Does changing the oil on a 1998 Ford Contour require any special treatment?

No, none whatsoever. Just drain the oil, oil the filter gasket, and install a new quality filter such as Motorcraft, Bosch, or Purolator. Pour in the correct amount of the correct weight oil and you are done.

My 1998 contour svt has been sitting for two years, trying to start car, it the gas bad in the tank

If it's been sitting for that long, yes the gas goes bad. Drain the tank, fuel lines and even the spark plugs becuase the old gas will foul them too.
Check air filter for free air flow and possible critters living in the intake... two years is quite a while for a car to sit... Also after it's running have your oil and filter changed as well.

Replace the oil filter, fill crankcase with proper amount of oil, drive car away and pray to God it was just a defective oil filter.

How "old" was this oil filter and how long ago was it supposedly replaced? Does the SVT have an oil pressure gauge (I know my non-SVT contour does not) and did you notice anything on the gauge (super-high pressure) before the filter burst?

Unfortunately, the idiot light tells you there is "NO" oil pressure, which is the condition you encountered after the filter went south.

Oil filter

The oil filter should be located on the left hand side on the bottom right above a bar connected to the frame. You will have to have van jacked up to see it right away. Not really hard to get to, just tight area.
