Check the injector for leaks, turn the key to on engine off and see if fuel pressure drops, look in the throttle body for drops also

When you say smell like exhaust, does it smell like rotten eggs (sulfur)? If so, could be catalytic converter clogged up.

My check engine light and limited performance reading came on at same time, opened hood catalytic Converter red hot. What causes this problem

2 things come to mind. a plugged catalytic and the engine is running too rich and the convertor is trying to burn off the excess fuel.

How to know when catalytic converter goes out on a 2001 jeep grand cherokee

Your "Check Engine" light will come on, the exhaust should smell worse than normal, the engine MAY refuse to run well at higher road speeds (if the catalytic plugs the exhaust pipe), and most importantly... if you crawl under the vehicle with it fully warmed up and bring your hand near the catalytic converter, it'll be hotter than the rest of the exhaust system if it's still functioning. If it's not functioning any more, it'll be the same temperature as the rest of the exhaust system.

A good catalytic converter may be hot enough to glow dull red after it's warmed up. That's why the manufacturer always wraps heat shields around them, to keep that heat away from the paint under your vehicle and keep the excess heat from entering the passenger compartment.

88 jeep ya, carb just replaced with a rebuild and ran good til I hit a big puddle. Now sounds and smells bad, won't stay running and exhaust glows red hot

I assume you mean 'yJ'.
That carb is computer controlled with a stepper motor that fine tunes the carburetor. If your exhaust is glowing - your catalytic converter will soon be destroyed! You need to fix the problem ASAP. If you say it 'won't stay running' it might be the catalytic converter has already been destroyed (i.e. clogged)
Start with a compression test. Running through water can cause all kinds of damage if the water gets sucked into the motor. Make sure you have good compression on all cylinders. If low on all, replace the timing chain. My YJ has 190K miles on it and the timing chain really helped.
While your at it, inspect the spark plugs.
I'd check all the wiring going to the carb - maybe something got knocked off.
I'd then remove the catalytic converter temporarily. The, start the car (outsided - it will be loud). If it keeps running, you have a bad cat (and simply replacing it with a new one could just burn out the new one.). Once the car is warmed up, you can test for adaquate computer control by measuring the voltage comming off he oxygen sensor. I thought there was a test port for that...
Unfortunately, that computer has no diagnostics and the only way you can tell if its working is by watching it do its thing. One of the things it does is keep the O2 output voltage near .5V when the motor is warmed up.

Changed catyletic converter new one glows red what could be problem?

Glowing red catalytic converter means your car is injecting too much gas, more than the spark plugs can burn up efficiently in the cylinders, or you have a serious misfire, so multiple cylinders are sending unburnt fuel into the exhaust system, where it will ignite inside the catalytic converter due to high heat. find the cause of excessive amount of unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust system. don't run it like that too much or it will ruin your new cat. quickly if it is glowing red... incorrect timing of engine, severe engine misfire, possible causes.

P0302 code

A code P0302 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:Faulty spark plug or wireFaulty coil (pack)Faulty oxygen sensor(s)Faulty fuel injectorBurned exhaust valveFaulty catalytic converter(s)Running out of fuelPoor compressionDefective computerPossible Solutions
If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

Lacking power, funny smell near exhaust and sputters and feels like it is going to stall when stopping for a red light.

Rotten egg smell is usually a bad converter. sweet smell is antifreeze meaning blown head gasket or worse.

Check engine light - catalytic converter problem

If you haven't replaced the O2 sensor that is causing your check engine light to come on by generating a fault code in the ECM, replace it first. Cleaning the Catalytic Converter is not the thing to do. Replacing the faulty sensor will pay for itself in the long run with the better fuel economy you will get.
