Question about 1991 Chevrolet Camaro

1 Answer

91 Camaro RS with 3.1 engine. Last couple of days it has been racing when started, tach runs to 4000 RPM. Shut the engine of and restart a couple of times and it is ok. Today is started same thing except now it will not idle when you restart it. Plugged my little tester in and the dash light gives code 12. Stumped at this point as to where to start looking. I have it sitting in the driveway with battery disconnected, figure I would reconnect and see if it heals itself.

Code 12 is normal when engine is not running and adl is to ground ... I would have a look around for broken or disconnected vacuum lines ... Another possible is a stuck idle air control motor.

I don't know about the older panels, but on newer ones, remove the IP, turn it clockwise and let the needle come around to 0 Plug it back in and check before you reassemble. if it doesn't work replace the TAC electric motor.

If it runs OK, and just won't idle the problem is probably your idle air control. Looking at the front of the motor it's just back and toward the the passenger side from where the air intake tube conects to the throttle body. Looks like a little round canister about 1 1/2 inches in diamater and 2 1/2 inches long with a plug in on the end. Usually held on by two small bolts, although some models thread into the side of the throttle body.

Sounds like your computer needs to be replaced, it controls all of the ignition firing order. somethng else, the cam position sensor may be bad also, only 2 other problems I'm aware of in the ignition circuit.

First off, I think you bought a raft of stuff you didn't need on that repair job! The sound of it at this time is that probably the fuel pump is about gone. You need to measure the fuel pressure (engine running) at the fuel rail (the test port looks like a tire valve) above the injectors. The pressure should be in the 45 to 55 PSI range. If the pump is toast, it will be much lower. The pump resides in the fuel tank. You probably have the check engine light on. If the code(s) are read out with a scanner, it will likely point to the fuel pump.
