Either the radiator must be clogged with sludge (there are special cleaning solutions that you can find at all car shops) or the radiator fan doesn't work properly - fix it and, if necessary, you can add another one besides the original.

Hi

One of the most common reasons for a vehicle overheating is a stuck thermostat. It can stick or freeze in the closed position blocking the flow of coolant to your engine. The easiest way to check if your thermostat is not open is to feel the upper radiator hose. Once the engine warms up it should become warm. If it does not get hot the thermostat is probably not opening.
A second common cause of overheating is a leak in your vehicle's cooling system. If your vehicle is losing coolant there will not be enough left in the vehicle to keep it cool. This is easy to diagnose as the radiator will be low on fluid and there will probably be a pool of coolant on the floor of your garage. Look for leaks in the most common places like around hoses and around the welds of your radiator. If you cannot find the leak you might need to take it to a shop to have the cooling system pressure tested.
The third cause is a faulty water pump. The water pump is a vital part of your cooling system since it is responsible for circulating coolant through your engine. With a faulty water pump your vehicle will not run for more than a few minutes without overheating.
The fourth cause of overheating is a bad cooling fan. There are two types of fans, electric and mechanical. The electric fan should come on automatically once the vehicle reaches operating temperature or when the A/C is turned on. If it doesn't you should have it replaced. The mechanical fan will run all of the time but has a clutch which makes it turn faster when the engine heats up. With the car turned off the fan should not turn too easily especially when the vehicle is warm. You can also check for signs of leakage from the fan clutch. If you see any problems have it replaced.
The fifth cause of overheating is a clogged radiator. Over time the radiator can accumulate deposits of rust and debris. This is especially true if radiator fluid has not been flushed on a regular basis. If you suspect a clogged radiator you should take it to a shop to have it professionally cleaned.

I just reapir the overheating problem on my 2001 chevy silverado 5.3 2wd. I am still overheating...it is full of coolant...reservour is still at the fill line with GM dexcool coolant. The problem to begin...


If it overheated i would replace the thermostant and gasket, also make sure its full of coolant, after replacing the thermostat you may have air in system so let it run until stat opens it may boil over a little until stat opens then it will **** coolant into block when that happens fill with coolant, you will need to let it idle for a while before new stat opens, hope this helps, good luck, i think the stat went bad the first time it overheated.

this sounds like low coolant level,or air in the system, you said the fans work they should cool it down just like the air flowing through it, this tells me the coolant flow is not good until higher rpms,try reving the motor and see if it cools down without movig if it does then its a flow problem maybe tstat not opening all the way or borken, the waterpump empeller rotted,or low coolant,i would also flush the system out if its not clean, ive seen a few of these that use dexcool coolant get pretty nasty from lack of coolant flushes, start by checking the level then a t- stat, hope this helps.

It sounds like your radiator is quite stopped up with corrosion and or other foreign material. Try flushing it yourself first and if the problem persist take the radiator to a shop and have it boiled out.

First check that the thermostat was installed correctly. It will not work properly if it was installed upside down. If this is the original radiator, it most likely is plugged up with deposits and corrosion. It needs to be replaced with a new one.

Sometimes fords can be tricky. Try to be sure that all of the air is purged from the system. I usually do this with a manual release cap. run the engine then slowly release the pressure. then the system will stabilize. If that doesn't help then you may have something restricting flow inside the water jackets through the engine. some shops have those nifty little cameras that they can run through the system to look for potential problems. hope it works out for you. I know how how much of a pain some of these problems can be. Good luck.

did it over heat before the therm? if not it is the wrong therm. Other than that you have to have a air pocket.
