The starter has a gear engagement special drive that comes out and engages the engines flywheel to turn the engine and start the car, this is refered to as the "Bendix Drive" it is broken and the starter will need to be replaced.

How do you know when you need a starter motor ?

Although the starter could be taken off the car and tested, most car parts stores nowadays will test the starter whilst it is still on the car for you free, at least in the U.S.A.
You might also have a corroded connection or a bad solenoid causing the problem.
God bless your efforts.

My 1997 CRV will not start after driving it home last night.

Depending on what part of the world you are in, it could be the battery, or a bad connection. Very cold weather can kill a battery, and it can also cause a bad connection to get worse. The starter pulls a large amount of current, and even more so in cold weather.
If nothing comes on when you open the door or turn the key, I would start checking the battery and major connections.

Short in wire from battery to starter or cylenoid? sometimes it will turn over other times not

I had my ford 91 ranger checked and both were good, plus alternator was in the green? But kept killing batteries and would not start without a jump. I replaced solenoid, starter, and battery. Finally removed the alternator and the BRUSHES were making contact just enough to keep my truck running, but when lights or any other accessory was used the truck would quit. New alternator and starts every time and can run all accessories without problem. Check the brushes on the alternator.

a loose contact on your ignition key or at the connections from your battery through the starter maybe the cause or the starter solenoid is defective..better go to the automotive shop..just kindly remember the above possibilities that i mentioned for your advantage and idea to what possibly maybe the cause of it..
