1998 Ford Explorer 2 door 4-wheel drive. My

1998 Ford Explorer 2 door 4-wheel drive. My transmission shifter mechanism is now having trouble going into park. The column shifter, cable and lever are good. The damage is a result of shifting out of park to drive on an incline with parking brake pads that do not hold (need to replace). What am I getting into with the shifter mechanism in my transmission?

I first posted that my shifter would not easily stay or go into park. Now the column shifter is 'loose' the position of P R N D3 is off, and cannot move down into D1. What do I need to replace? Thank you very much for the assistance.

You need to remove the trans pan to inspect the parking pawl and rod. Hopefully you can adjust or repair with trans in your vehicle.

Also don't assume your cable etc is okey. You don't know that. You may be able to adjust it and be okey.

O?D light flashing on 1998 ford explorer saying it is off. when you try to drive it the overdrive goes in and out.

the overdrive light flashing on a A4Od transmission is a fault signal for the transmission , just like a ck engine light but for the transmission only , get a code read to find the fault stored in the ecm and then you'll know what exactly it is
its very common for engine swaps to have a few intermittent sensor failures on restart due to the connectors all getting maybe not all the care and protection they deserve in the swap (plastic baggies) and having a bit of dirt and corrosion in them now (spray contact cleaner)

with the od in/out/in/out an educated guess is that the engine throttle position sensor is not being read now , but a code reader will tell all

I have a 98 Ford Explorer, sometimes it gives me trouble to go into park. The shifter is very hard to shift into any gear. I have to put my truck sometimes into neutral to start it.

sounds like you have a bad shifter cable. its not to bad of a job to replace if you have some mechanical experience. then again you may want to take it to a repair shop, because its easier done with a lift handy

Will not go in 4 low 4x4 lights start blinking after trying . reset light by unhooking battery . then goes in 4 high normelly but not 4 low. i thlnk auto 4 is working 4 liter SOHC 1998

Normally 4 wheel drive HIGH is engaged on the fly or as you are moving more than 10 km per hour or 10 miles per hour but 4 wheel drive LOW is engaged at around 3 to 5 mph. no more or you could ruin the transfer case. Try going from 2 high to 4 high by switching back and forth and then try 2 high to 4 low when idling along. What usually happens is the mechanics under the car freeze up or rust up and you have to switch back and forth to free it up.

While driving my 1998 ford explorer the 4 wheel drive lights on the panel flash on and off both of them hi and low together

I seen this once before owner had 2 different size tires so the 4 wheel drive was reading a slip in one of the wheels. And the 4 wheel drive was going on and off.
They replaced the tires with all 1 size and it went a way.

Blinking 4 wheel High and 4 wheel low lights always the same number of times. 6 each time about every 8-10 minutes appart.

These options no longer work. Could be the switch, shifter or transfer case . have it checked out by a transmission repair shop.

I have a 1996 ford explorer 4 door 4 wheel drive with automoatic trans...what years will interchange mechanically with mine

1996 & up are OBD2, I suggest if you are going to try to play with Transmissions , you find a good 4WD aftermarket Shop & a 4WD Forum for you Exploder. The physical fit of the Transmission may not mean it will work properly.

No same trans. Likely has a stuck transfer case motor. try tapping it with a rubber mallet when someone tries to shift it into 4x4

Having trouble getting vehicle in park , after putting in reverse or drive im having trouble getting it to go into park. Do i need a new shift cable or is there a adjustment on the cable

Shift cable might have melted and have hard spot. Block wheels and put vehicle into neutral. Have someone else operate shifter to see if cable is the problem.
