You can get a free scan at Autozone or Oreillys. If there is a problem with the richness a code may be in the computer without showing a "check engine" light.

You have a 1982 and it is possible to have fuel tank and fuel line leaks due to rust. Sometimes the fuel evaporates without hitting the ground. What you need to do is pressure test the lines and tank. Some Radiator shops can do this for you. They will put a fuelcap on your truck with a fitting for an airchuck or Vacuum pump and see if the system is sealed.

You can also remove a few sparkplugs to look for fouling, but the free engine scan should have shown that problem. There is also a engine management temperature switch that works with water temperature. I have seen thermostats go bad and the engine never heats up enough to get out of the COLD engine cycle. Look at your temperature gauge to see where the needle is at. If you do not have the gauge package on your truck, a new thermostat is not expensive and worth a try.

Would be interested in what you found to fix it.

How much money in gas will i spend in a 224 mile trip, at $2.29 a gallon?

Depends on miles per gallon of vehicle. Average mpg of say 15 mpg would take 15 gallons to travel 225 miles.(15x15=225). At $2.29 per gallon @15 gallons=$34.35. So figure out mpg of your vehicle and do the math.

My 1997 town car is burning to much fuel not leaking it but burning it i can smell the gas when driving it

It can be several things. The engine automatically sets to a RICH mode for cold starts. It will stay in RICH until a temperature sensor warms up. There are sometimes 2 sensors with one for the dash and the other for the engine controls.
Next would be a faulty fuel pressure regulator keeping the pressure too high. Or dirty fuel injectors failing to close properly.
Finally, air leaks in the intake manifold will make the O2 sensors dump fuel to restore the fuel ratio. Check with water spray bottle on intake seams while engine is running.

After getting gasoline, it increases wrong mileage with camry 2003

One tank of gas is not enough to compare mileage. Or are you saying the computer's readout of mpg estimate is showing less? Try a tank or two of premium and see if that helps. Keep track of gas mileage. Driving techniques have a lot to do with gas mileage, as does long trips vs. short trips, highway cruising vs. city driving. For best mileage, do regular maintenance and keep the car in top running condition-good spark plugs and clean filters and clean oil ! Attend to minor problems before they escalate.
If you want to check actual miles per gallon, start with a full tank. Write the odometer reading down, and go. Everytime you put gas in, write down the amount. When you are close to 1,000 miles from the time you started, go fill the tank and include that amount of gas to your previous list. Now add up all the gas used and divide it into the miles to get miles per gallon. (976 miles/31.8 gallons = 30.69 mpg ) . Only one tank will skew your numbers, might be off cause the tank was filled more to the top than the previous fill-up. About a thousand miles of driving will give you a very accurate figure of miles per gallon for your car.

Why is my 2005 accent going through so much gas? I am thinking a fuel leak somewhere.

You generally would smell a fuel leak. The Accent is a fuel injected vehicle, if the system were leaking, it would be at over 20-40 PSI even at idle, and a fire would be possible and you would know it.

You need to make sure your mileage is low by figuring your MPG (miles per gallon) on a regular basis. Fill up at a station on level ground, reset your trip odometer to keep track of your mileage, drive out that tankfull and go back to that same pump and fill up the same way. Stop at the first click and then do the math. The number of miles since filling up, divided by the number of gallons it took to refill it, give you an average Miles per gallon for your car.

If you compare your figure to the normal specs for your car, you'll know if you need a tune up, new tires, or just to change the old driving habits.

You can use any station with a level filling area, it's just much easier to be more accurate when you use the same station repeatedly with the same pump & setting the handle at the same speed to fill.

Good luck !

I only get 15 miles on a gallon of gas, when I try to speed up the car starts jerking and If I puch on the exsalrater it wont speed up and I can smell gas. If I have the heater on it's much worse

If you smell the gas I would have it checked you may be dumping to much fuel into the carburetor or may have a fuel leak which can cause a fire.

I HAVE A 2003 GMC ENVOY. I NEED TO KNOW HOW MANY MILES CAN I DRIVE BEFORE THE GAS RUNS OUT ON A FULL TANK?

there is a book publish by the govnt or minister of transport on the exact milage as well if you know how many liters or gallons go in your tank like 80 liters and the gas is 1.00 a liter it cost $80 for 80 liters on a full tank you do 500 km but make sure proper conditions of 100km a hour tires all proper equal pressure the wind is also a facture there is a lot involved to calculate your gas proformance as well if you had a oil change done latly you can find out on a govt site for gas consuption or consumers report

I bought a used 2003 A4 Convertible Audi 3.0 Feels it burns more gas than expected. Is there anything I can check or do to reduce that. Thanks Sean

to see what you get for mileage, take it to a gas station and fill it till the pump stops and reset your trip meter. Drive it around like you normally would to work or whatever till the tank is almost empty and go fill it up again till the pump stops. Its best to go to the same pump you used before. Once it is full look to see how many gallons or liters you put in(This is how many you used since the last time you filled up). Take the number of miles/kilometers from your trip meter(the number of miles/kilometers you drove since you last filled up) and divide it by the gallons/liters you used and you will get your miles/kilometers per gallon/liter. Compare this with the rating your vehicle is suppose to get. But remember it can very depending on how you drive.
Miles/kilometers divided by gallons/liters

My 1999 Ford Escort LX has a problem with the clutch. It is a hydraulic clutch and a manual transmission. I need a diagram to show where the drain and filler plugs are in the transmission so that I can...

When you remove your gas cap do you have alot of pressure releasing out of you gas cap? Also do you smell it more while your running the a/c or do you smell it as if it where in the car? You might want to see if the fuel pump gasket was replaced when you had the new gas tank installed or possibly check under the hood for injectors or the pressure regulator. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

We have a 1990 Honda civic LX 5 speed. 4 door. We are getting about 20 miles to a gallon. Check engine light comes on after a few minutes of running. There is a strong exhaust smell at idle and black...

Try to give it a little time because you just did some work, it may need to burn out... but black smoke is an oil burning problem. even though the car will still run you dont want this problem because if oil is burning in your engine, it means oil is getting where it does not need to be witch HOPEFULLY, is just a gasket but you are not just burning fuel so it may be affecting your gas mileage!. it sounds like old gaskets!? maybe? gaskets are a **** to replace especially in a civic, and they are everywhere! i know i just took the whole engine apart and put it back together again in a 95.

As far as the heavy exhaust smell... may be a leak or crack in the manifold!

And as far as your sensors and dash lights go, save your money and dont replace any more! especially if you smell a problem and are getting only 20 miles to a gallon (especially in a honda) because the sensors are probably right!

How many gallons per hour does this car lose?

hey
at the begging u should clarify how many gallon u used.
112 miles at 28 miles per gallon --> 4 gallons burned (112/28)
So that means we leaked 11 - 4 = 7 gallons

Now figure out how long the car was driving.
112 miles at 64 miles per hour --> 1.75 hours

So, leak was at a rate of 7 gallons in 1.75 hours
7/1.75 = 4 gallons per hour leaked.
