I’ve had vehicles come in with white smoke to me it might be vapor that’s due to water going thru the pistons.

I have had the same prob in my 1996 Lumina. Thought it was rings or valves. Check out your trans vacuum modulator to see if the gasket in it is bad. If so, then it is sucking trans fluid through the vacumm hose back into the intake manifold and burns it in the chamber. Mimics a valve or ring prob. Also check the PCV hose and connections. It could look fine, but it does not take much for a bad hose/connection to foul the PCV function. It will blow smoke out the tailpipe too.

CAR STOPPED ACCELERATING AND WHITE SMOKE FROM TAILPIPE.

Large amounts of white smoke, often sweet smelling, indicates coolant in combustion chamber. Usually warped or cracked head.

White smoke from exhaust too much

If it is steam that means water is getting into a cylinder. Generally this is a blown gasket. One way to test is remove each plug one at a time and turn the engine over. Water coming out of a spark plug hole will confirm. Could be other problems. I had a blown head gasket once and would leave a cloud of steam at a stop light. Unfortunately the car won't run too long and the cylinder would fill with water and stop. Then it was a tow to a garage for repair.

That white cloud is caused by a blown head gasket, the knocking noise could be, a rod bearing, thrust bearing, somewhere in the valve train. Replace the head gasket and see if it still knocks, and change the oil and filter too. If it still knocks, than you have bigger problems.
