Question about 1997 Mercury Cougar XR7

My 97 Cougar idles at about 1500 RPM at a stop and will accelerate to 40mph without applying the accelerator? Seems to bea problem at higher speeds too. What could be causing this?

    my 97 cougar 30th annv does the same thing but i put a new iac on it before this promelem cae up does anyone have any other ideas?

    Did you find out what was causing this. I have a 94' that is doing the same thing. idle at about 1500. Thanks in anvance for your help.

Could be a faulty IAC (Idle Air Control) motor. Get this checked out because it will wear out your brakes quick, not to mention fuel mileage, Good luck, Gary

Pull your transmission (gearbox) oil dipstick and look at the oil. It should be a clean red colour. If brown or black change the oil as soon as possible because it is burnt and old ... you have slipping.

RPM drops to zero at idling after engine accelerates when warm


This may been an ignition module or a MAF sensor, this car may need to be diagnosed using a OBD I computer code reader to accurately diagnose the problem.
