If your engine code is AEG your cyl #2 piston rings installed up side down, most likely. It could also be bad valve seals. It could be a leaky valve cover and torn rubber hoses at the intake track, leaking around the exhaust manifold.

Thank you for the rating. As for the backfire and pre-ignition of the cylinders, this means your engine timing is not correct. A trip to a VW specific repair shop is needed in order to understand what is going on regarding engine operation. They will need to hook up a scan tool above the pedal area to tap in and communicate with your vehicle's ECU (Engine Control Unit). Once connected, the technician will find any fault codes (DTC) activated due to a malfunction and is stored in memory until that malfunction is repaired or manually erased using a scan tool. This has to be done soon because backfire will damage your catalytic converter if allowed to operate the vehicle in this manner. A catalytic converter is expensive and labor to install it takes a few more in your purse. So be ready for fault codes to show up and click here for it's description or interpretation and not keep you in the dark.

hi,,u mention that if my engine is a AEG that piston ring 2 is installed upside down.where would i look to find this out??thanks

  • Ed Paje Aug 12, 2010

If you search this problem in a VW forum specific to your model, you will find that the AEG engines are almost all prone to high oil consumption. When the head is removed and pistons were separated from the engine block, the number two oil piston seal's articulation is different from the rest of cylinders. By removing the spark plugs on each cylinder, determine which cylinder the spark plug has an oily residue. This will indicate where your oil problem comes from.

Is the cure to remove piston and turn the oil ring the correct way round (assuming its in good condition) or to fit a new oil ring only? I have a similar problem with a 2000 bora it ejects all the engine oil with the red oil light on, just refill with oil and all is well again?

If it was my engine I'll just have it overhauled by a machine shop. While it's the same engine the internals (bearings, rings and gaskets) will be new unless it needs major parts. Another option is to look in ebay for a used or a brand new engine that pops out once in a while.

I took my 2005 hyuandi sonata for oil change and they ask if I had change the timing belt already I said no. The car has 139000 miles. Do I really need it to change it

You change the belt at 80,000 miles

No, you can do whatever you want, you own the car

Would seem you don't educate yourself or read an owners manual

That will get expensive some day

Do you change your Trans Fluid every 3 years & not go over
30,000 miles or brake fluid every 2 years

You better save a lot of money

When the preform the transmission service they will drain you transmission of its ATF fluid an replace it with new fluid. It is essentially an oil change for your transmission.

Lots of forgein car dealers say no but ive own and service nissan toyota and i dont change the fluid because you never get all the old oil out and then you mix new and old, what we do is called a trany flush done with a bg flush machine and is done every 30,000 miles unless its syntheic trany oil then at 100,000 miles, the flush is done with a cleaner and then a conditioner and removes 100% of the old oil. hope this helps.

What problems present an audio 1999 with 250000 km

If you mean what could go wrong about the time of that many miles? Now is the time to change your timing belt if you have not done so. Actaully should be done every 100,000 miles.
If you have never changed the oil then that would be a good idea, Air filter, fuel filter, brakes, shocks and struts, Cv joints if it has them. Get a lube job done when you get the oil change. You may want to flush out the radiator wish radiator flush. Chang the spark plugs, Distributar cap and rotor. Windshield wiper blade replacement if not done already. But maybe I misunderstand you. What exactly were you asking? The Raz

I have a '99 Voyager and the oil pressure sensor stays on and beeps at me while I am driving. It has plenty of oil. The oil was just changed 2 days ago and the oil pressure switch was changed 2 months ago....

The first thing to do, is take it back to your mechanic
and have them hook up a mechanical oil pressure
gauge. To find out the actual oil pressure, before any
serious damage results. As for the oil pressure sending unit, it's not that strange to get a bad one out
of the box. But lets eliminate the obvious first and have the gauge check done. Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Just bought a 1999 mazda mx5 2 days ago and found it has a knock type rattle in the engine that lasts about 3 seconds on a cold start. Regards Bruce. ps cars done 160,000ks.

it seems the oil is too thick. The previous owner or the dealer may have added thick oil treatment. And the pump has to work extra hard to get it circulating. Change the oil and filter. Use 10w40 oil when refilling. do not overfill. It has many miles too , so it could also be that the oil pump is beginning to get clogged.

My 99 Dodge Ram 1500 I just purchased high oil consumption

It could be burning and you don't notice. Remove air filter box assembly from top of intake manifold. Hold throttle wide open (engine off) and look through throttle body (flashlight may be required) and see if oil is puddled up inside manifold. If so then the intake manifold will need to be removed so the lower pan gasket can be replaced.
