Question about 2002 Mitsubishi Montero

1 Answer

Hi friends, I just got a 2002 Montero with 78,000 miles on the clock. It runs good but has these two problems for which I need solutions. 1. it does not start at the first kick, you have to kick three times and hold the third kick for about 3 seconds before it starts. Please know that I have replaced the spark plugs, changed oil, serviced and calibrated the nozzles , changed the crank A sensor, and tested another cold start sensor . All without luck. 2. the gear change comes with a sudden kick and in the auto transmission. especially between the 1st and 2nd gears. I suppose the transmission change should be smooth and not felt by the driver. PLEASE ASSIST Thanks, Victor.

2002 montero sport, i am experiencing tapping/ticking noise in the upper head department of 3.6 v6 engine. i change my oil regularly every 3000 miles. i put in seafoam in gas tank hoping it would help...

hi putting seafoam in fuel will clean the valves and pistons over time to use to do lifters you need to add to oil measure out the right amount for the oil measurements on the can.. also the tapping is it more when its cold or just the same no matter hot or cold or is it more louder when hot. when was the last time the timing was checked, are you using 5w/30 or 10w/30 oil.

Mitsu Montero Sport '02 engine stalls but not when air cond is on.

hi there. the reason that the engine idles good when the air-con is engaged is that ussually all vehicles nowadays have a vacumm advance mechanism. this is triggered mainly by a electric solenoid valve which is also attached parallel to the source supplying power to compressor. a small vacumm hose with a diameter like a common pencil or ballpen case. its made of rubber and it runs from the alternator vacumm pump then to the solenoid valve and to the vacumm advancer unit attached to the injection pump throttle. this system raises the idle a tad higher.

if your montero runs completely normal and you experience no other problems with your engine except for your present problem, then the solution is just raising the idle a little higher. if your montero is equiped with a RPM guage on the dash, try adjusting the idle to around 800 rpms. it would be healthier for your car if the idle raises a bit when you engage the air-con because this would compensate for the added load on your engine.

hope this helps.

2003 Saturn L200. Car will turn over but will not

I have the same model. Congrats you made it over a 100,000 miles! Most of them failed after as little as 20,000 or around 78,000 miles becaue there was a design flaw in that the timing chain did not get any oil to it. I had the 78,000 mile engine. Mine failed while driving at 65 miles an hour on the expressway. Pretty much wrecked the engine. The problem with putting in a used engine is that no other type of engine will fit in this car and you can count on engine failure again at 20,000; 78,000 or from what you tell me after 100,000 miles. You would be better off investing in a down payment for a Toyota made here in America that gets over 50 miles to the gallon. I used to be an oldsmobile man and then reluctantly switched to Saturn but am fed up with GM completely now and all american car manufactures.

2002 Jaguar X-Type 3.0L Sedan 4D buying this car with 78,000 on it? from dealer what concerns should i worry about , its 8400 price. what is the est life of engine?

First of all when you are looking at buying a used car, see if you can have a certified technician look at it (someone from a different dealership) before you buy. Things to look at for sure:

1. Prop shaft (as indicated in solution #1). Once you get up over 50K miles it tends to whine, definitely in colder climates.
2. Hoses. The X-type is known to spit out "Evap Leak" codes (check engine light will come on intermittently). Remove the plastic cover from the engine block and check the hoses there for cracks and splits. The hoses get hot when the engine is running and cool down when the engine is turned off. It makes the hoses brittle and causes cracks/splitting, etc.
3. Have the transmission checked. This car has a "lubed for life" system on a lot of the parts, including the tranny.
4. Have the transfer case checked. This controls your AWD and is known to start to fail after the 60K mile mark. (most dealerships will tell you the x-type needs its auto tranny replaced every 3-5 years!)
