If your battery is over 5 years old, it's the battery. More than likely it is the battery. The alternator just charges the battery whenever the car is running.

I don't know if your car was running when you jumped the other car (your car should always be running to jump start another car).

If you told me that you were driving and all of a sudden the car died (because the battery ran out of juice, because it wasn't getting charged by the alternator), I would say the alternator is the culprit.

But if your car can't start from a standstill, and your battery is over 5 years old, I would replace the battery. 4-5 years is about the lifespan of a car battery imho (an alternator can't charge a battery past it's lifespan). many "maintenance-free" batteries have an "eye" which you can see on the top of the battery if the battery needs changing. Another possibility with it being summer is the battery being dried up (for which you can add distilled water, just be careful you don't splash battery acid into your eyes!). if your battery is 2-3 years old or less, I would just have the battery charged.

Car wont turn over and making a humming noise when key is in on position. when i try to start it the car makes a clicking sound.

the alternator isn't charging battery that would account for loss of power and also clicking when try to start , try a jump start if it starts then you know its the battery so with engine running check the alternator charge rate with a voltmeter across the battery terminals anything below 13 volts then check the alternator belt is tight enough , good condition etc , then recheck charge rate if still low fit new alternator

95 Nissan won't turn over

If you turn the ignition switch to START and hear a relay click but nothing else, the starter may be defective or jammed

87 f250 drained brand new battery

I would first have the alternator checked by an auto electrician to ensure it is working correctly and is providing the correct volume of current. It may be faulty and when driving you will be drawing battery power instead of power from the alternator to run the electrics. This will drain the battery.

Alternators do not last forever and if you are still running the original unit it is likely to be on it's last legs and you will need a replacement unit.

My 2003 nissan will not start. the engine turns over but it won't start or it acts like it about to start and cuts off. i know i need a new battery. could there be a problem with my starter

Then replace the battery first, yes, but if the engine stops turning over the starter may have a problem as well. Start with one thing at a time though so you narrow down what the exact problem is and don't replace more than is necessary. If it was just the starter having a problem often you'd hear a noise from it like a spinning sound or clicking sound but the engine wouldn't move.

1998 Nissian Altima Not starting

Nothing by either party was said about the starter. The battery and wires can all be in great shape, and if they are and the owner hears a clicking noise when trying to start it its a pretty good bet they may have a starter that's locked up.

One good 'ole trick on those starters. If you can reach the starter, a couple of sharp rapes with a hammer will have it starting again, then you know it time to replace the starter.
