I have a 2001 VW Passat 1.8T with automatic tranny. sometimes after i let the car sit after driving for maybe 20 mins or so, i start driving again the car starts shaking pretty bad and the check engine light flashes and it feels like i lose alot of power. sometimes it happens for a few seconds then goes away, other times a few minutes but it always seems to go away. its been hard trying to diagnose it because it is so random. i was thinking maybe a tranny problem by im not sure. any advice?

I would check to see if there is a miss on a certain cylinder on the 2001 VW Passat you have a problem with.

If it has a miss on a certain cylinder, it may be a blown head gasket that allows a little bit of antifreeze into the cylinder, and prevents detonation of the gas/air mixture in the cylinder in question.

I had this problem on my car.

I don't think it's a tranny problem, it sounds more like an engine problem.

Another problem that I have experienced is a miss due to the computer randomly not firing a certain cylinder's fuel injector. This can caus a lot of vibration, also.

I would definitely have it scanned for the codes stored in the computer with an OBD-II scanner.

This can point to clues that can lead to a solution for you.

Good luck on this engine diagnosis and repair.

When the engine light comes on you should have it checked. I would check your battery connections and your grounds first off. If you can get an engine code that would help narrow it down.
Thank you,

    Hi,
You can get your engine codes checked for free at any autozone. You didn't give me any new feedback so that makes it impossible to assist you further.
    Thank you and good luck,
    Lee

I have a 2001 VW Passat. It seems like it is possessed. The automatic window will go up without pressing the button. The speedometer shakes when I am stopped and shakes until I reach 65. Door locks

Best place to start is having the battery tested & replaced if needed. Then the battery cable connections cleaned & re-tightened. This is better than sprinkling with Holy water for a car.

chances are the spring that opens the flap is weak, just replace the spring.if it gets stuck shut pull away the carpet/trim from inside the trunk to get to the flap wire.

2004 Passat 1.8T tiptronic automatic harsh down shifts

My 2004 Passat 1.8T 4motion has the same problem. Took it to the dealer. I thought it might be a software issue as there was a service bulletin for a similar issue registered at the NHTSA.gov website. They claimed they did all the sensor checks and found nothing. Then they said the tranny was shot and for a mere $5,000 I could have a new one. I begged to differ so I called VW itself and described the issue. Their customer service rep was not even up to the type of car this was and had no idea about what I was inquiring. Those people are trained to be obstructionists by VW. I tried to get this problem elevated to a higher level and was told they were the end of the line. Sadly we're on are own with this manufacturer. They simply deny, deny and deny. I'd suggest you lodge the problem with the NHTSA under defect investigation. Maybe some day they'll find it was a design or manufacturing flaw, just like their coil issue.

There is a small drain plug that needs to be removed, the car level, suspended on Jack's, monitor the tranny fluid temperature with obd2 tool, engine started from cold, , the fluid will ooze out of the open plug hole at proper temperature. Use a new plug when done topping the fluid. Intricate task

2003 automatic VW Passat not changing gears right

The trannys on the vw's are weird, they actually have a brain which tells the tranny what to do, when to switch gears under the driving conditions etc. Is thair a check engine light on? when is the last time you had a tranny service done on it? Also, it sounds even weirder, but is your alternator ok, is it putting out the proper volts to the battery? the alternator not charging the system can lead to alot of weird acting issues.

Engine is shaking, reduced power to engine, service engine light on, all of a sudden, car was driving fine

Could be anything you need to give more info. Have the cars computer scanned for codes, It may help identify the problem or help lead you in the right direction.

Transmission

Change tranny fluid and replace filter if not done in last 30K miles.  Cheapest possible fix of anything you can do,  and is routine maintenance.   This will frequently resolve it.
DIY info here,  this site also has very good prices on VW/Audi OEM parts.
