Question about 1994 Chevrolet Caprice Classic
I have a 1994 Caprice Classic with a 4.3L V8. The Car seems to have a slight stutter when idle almost as though a spark plug is missing a beat. At certain speeds (around 45mph usually) you can feel a slight stutter but pressing the gas pedal a little harder will stop it from doing so. So far I have replaced the fuel filter and one O2 sensor (driver side). I am going to try to replace the other O2 sensor soon but so far it seems to still stutter ever so slightly when idling. Can someone explain the purpose of the two separate O2 sensors and does this sound like something that may be causing the problem? It has been like this for well over a year and I haven't had any major problems with the car but I sure would like to fix it.
Also, Check Engine light was on and going by the Repair Manual it was a fuel problem but that is as specific as it got. After replacing the driver side O2 sensor the check engine light seems to have stopped. It would turn on... stay on for a while... then turn off.
Any help would be appreciated.
You may have an intermittent slow response on the rear O2 sensor, I'm not sure if you have a pre and post O2 sensor, off the top of my head, but I would get the system hooked up to a monitor to see if there is any pending codes (big change over from 1994 to 1995). Is it an OBDII system? As far as the stumbling, I have a 91 silverado with a 5.7L engine and it's had a very light stumble at idle since new, day one, and every sensor is on target, idle, 1000 rpm, 2000 rpms, 3000 rpms, and still has a slight stumble with all sensors within range. To this day it still has a slight stumble but it still runs great, Good luck, Gary
