My car is overheating and i had to fill my radiator with antifreeze. how do i go about trying to fix it

Try to replace your thermostat check see if your fans are working properly and if you can see if your water pump is also working.

How do i get antifreeze back in a radiator after it over heats


You have a reservoir that has fluid level markings for hot and cold for the coolant fill it to the full mark for cold after the engine is cooled down. If this is the reservoir that burst and it leaks then replace it. If the engine just overheated and boiled the antifreeze out then find out why and fix that issue.

check to see that water is flowing in radiator by watching open radiator while warming up if no flow replace pump. is radiator free of clogs? flush cooling system, change thermostat, fill with 50/50 mix water/antifreeze. also if its running lean that can cause a hot engine.

Over heating


Try checking your antifreeze levels. If you antifreeze tank is low try filling it to the "Fill" or "Full" level. If your antifreeze tank is empty, remove your radiator cap, (make sure the engine has cooled off. If you try to open it while it's hot, you could get sprayed with hot antifreeze) and fill the radiator slowly. Then refill your antifreeze tank. Remember to always mix the antifreeze with water (50/50 mix) for full protection.

Coolant level ok no leaks new 195 deg. thermostat still very little heat from heater defective heater core?


I am assuming your vehicle has the pink antifreeze called Dexcool. This is the recommended coolant for all late model GM cars and trucks. This coolant tends to form a pasty sludge in the cooling system which can lead to overheating and/or plugged up heater core. Try flushing the cooling system with a good aftermarket product such as prestone radiator flush. First thing to do is drain all the pink coolant, then add the radiator flush and fill with plain water. Run the engine according to directions on the flush container. Drain the radiator again and refill with plain water. Run the engine for a few minutes and drain again. Keep repeating this until all the pink antifreeze has been eliminated. Fill the system with 2 gallons of green antifreeze. Make sure the antifreeze container says it is compatible with aluminum engine parts. Hope this helps. If it does, then you won't have to replace the heater core.

Toyota Corolla 2003 CE. Car started overheating, Pulled over and steam was coming from engine. Found out radiator seemed to be leaking. poured antifreeze into radiator and heard liquid splashing on ground...


You may need to "burp" the system and get the air out. When car has completely cooled, take radiator a off, start car, let it warm up (but not overheat) and see if level drops. Add coolant/water mix to top it off. Never run straight antifreeze. At most a 50/50 mix of distilled water and antifreeze.
Air can get trapped in areas of the system when its been drained. Just monitor that temp and don't risk damaging the engine by overheating.

Water overheating on a year 2000 seat toledo 1.9tdi se, is the water pump easy to replace??


Water pumps are not normally what causes overheating, in fact that would be my last item to change. The only way that a water pump fill cause overheating is if the impeller has come off the shaft or completely worn down. I would first start with the thermostat. If this dosn't fix it, then I would be looking at the condition of the radiator I.E. is it plugged, are the fins up front full of bugs and debris ect. Then I would also check the cooling fan operation, does it come on when engine is hot? also does it come on with the A.C. operation-it should. Then last of all the water pump- and no its not easy on this one, due to lack of clearance.

Replaced cracked radiator in 2000 Chrysler LHS but car still overheating. What could be the problem?


fix the radiator first.because coolant temperature sensor need to be in antifreeze.when antifreeze get up to 190 degrees. the coolant sensor act as a thermostat.it resistance decrease then the pcm will command cooling fans to run.if antifreeze low the coolant temperature sensor not going to work. engine is going to over heat.

there is a coolant cap on the overflow bottle check it for seal
i'd just replace it
also if you put the new thermostat in backward the overheating would be significant

1995 legacy 250t wagon - overheating


Two possiblities; a blown head gasket, or a freeze plug leaking. If possible take it to a trusted shop and have the pressure checked on the radiator, they can tell you if your radiator is stopped up, or the freeze plug is leaking, and if it's blowing back in the radiator when you remove the cap then it's a blown head gasket.
