Locate the starter and solenoid. You do not state which engine you have so I cant tell you exactly where, altough the starter is low down toward the rear of the engine The solenoid sits on the side of the starter and has 3 wires connected to it. 1 Large red from the battery. One large copper/black which runs between the solenoid and starter (so you only see about 3 inches of wire) and a third thin wire which comes from the ignition.
Using a set of jumper cables. Connect the negative lead to the body of
the starter and the positive to the upper of the 2 connectors on the
solenoid.(The one with the short piece of wire connected to it) Be careful with the positive and do not short it out against anything else. You should hear the starter spin. It will not turn the motor over because the solenoid is not activated. If the starter does not spin it is defective and needs to come out for repairs.
If it does spin connect the positive to the lower of the 2 thick connectors on the solenoid. Now have someone try starting the engine with the ignition. If the motor turns over the wire between the battery and starter needs replacing.
If not(with the negative still connected to the starter) run a wire from battery + to the thin wire's connector on the solenoid. If the starter turns over then you have a problem with the wiring to the starter or the starter relay. If not. Remove the starter for repairs.
Associated parts to check : Fuse(10A) C-1 in the footwell of the vehicle. Starter relay : X-17 in the fuse and relay box in the engine compartment
You may have a bad ground cable. This is the cable that runs from the negative post of the battery to a bolt on the chassis, usually down low on the frame. You could have oil in the area where the ground cable attaches to the chassis and that coulc be causing a bad ground. To fix you would remove the bolt, scrub the area clean, use a little sandpaper on the cable and the frame and retighten the bolt. You could also have too much corrosion on one end of the ground cable making it unsuitable for grounding the battery properly.
Tap on the starter sounds like what your running into is a starter problem.
