Question about 1993 Ford Tempo

2 Answers

I have a 1993 Ford Tempo. Brake lights don't work . . . just the window brake light. Fuse diagram says flasher and brake lights are on same fuse. The flashers work but not lower brakes. I replaced the bulbs so that is not the problem. Any ideas? Thanks!

Chances are the brake switch has failed. The switch is located at the brake pedal in the front or behind the pedal arm. You will have to be on your back looking in order to see it. There will be a two wire switch. When the brake pedal is depressed the contacts on the switch open (or close depending on how the switch is placed) that in turn illuminates the brake lights. Easy to check with a 12 volt test light. One of the wires at the connector will be the power wire, with the test light grounded, probe one of the wires - the power wire should light the test light up. If neither wire light the test light then you have an open on the power circuit. You will need a wiring diagram to find out which wire is the power wire and trace it back until you find the open. If the switch is getting power and the brake lights are not illuminating,, the switch is bad and will have to be replaced. A fairly inexpensive part and fairly easy to replace. If you have little or no mechanical experience you may need to get a technician to replace it. The replacement switch may come with instructions on how to replace it. Hope this helps.

This is a strange one.One brake light out would be more common but both, hmm. It could be the switch that activates the brake lights.Usually it is near the top of the brake pedal on the back or maybe a little higher up(they are usually attached to the linkage somewhere).Once the pedal gets to a certain point,it activates the lights. If you cannot locate it by looking, most libraries have haynes manuals or an equivelant that you can use to find it.Good luck!

What would cause the turn signals to work sometimes and sometimes not ?

A bad flasher relay would do that. They are usually located on the fuse panel and plug into it.

Failing brake lights

On page 158 of this manual it says that the stop lamps are fuse position number 17. Find that fuse in your fusebox and pull it out to see if it is bad. If so, replace it and then test brake lights again to see if they are functioning properly

1193 plymouth voyager. Brake lighs don't work

Maybe a relay or fuse is bad or the wiring to it.

But you said that the third brake light works.

So the brake switch must be ok.
Turn signals would be the flasher or wiring to it.prev.gif next.gif
CIRCUIT PROTECTION Fuse Block Fig. 1: The fuse box is located under a cover at the lower left instrument panel — 1987 Voyager shown 85616099.jpg
The fuse block and relay bank is located on the driver's side under the lower instrument panel. The fuse block contains fuses for various circuits as well as circuit breakers, horn relay, ignition lamp thermal time delay, and the turn signal flasher. The hazard warning flasher is mounted into a bracket below the fuse block. The individual fuse and relay locations can be found in the wiring diagrams at the end of this section.

What causes both brake and flashers to stop working?

Many cars have the same fuse for turn signal and brake lights. Check that fuse for a start.
