If your hearing a high pitched sound,it is probably your alternator working overtime to charge your battery,if it idles at a higher rpm, then someone tweeked ur idle speed, check under the hood,u can easily release using a wrench,

Why does my 89 jeep comanche 4.0 have a high idle upon start and sometimes while driving. t has been only doing so upon sart but now it does it randomly while driving.

Most vehicles have a high idle until the engine gets hot. As for your random problem, might want to check for any vacuum leaks that could cause this problem.

When checking, best to do with cold engine. Start your vehicle and spray short amounts of starting fluid near vacuum hoses, if idle changes, you may have a leak. Keep away from exhaust manifold if at all possible. Also spray near intake hoses and air filter housing.

Uncontrolled increase of rpms during start

It could be a number of things but I would start by using a diagnostic device in order to determine exactly what the vehicles ECU has to report. Based on your description I would look at the throttle position sensor. Irregular revving of the engine could be pin pointed to the idle control valve, but only if the revving is relatively small. If it seems like someone has their foot on the accelerator, and has it planted firmly to the floor, then I would definitely be looking at the idle throttle position sensor. Some vehicles also use a fly by wire system where the accelerator cable goes to a throttle position sensor that isn't even near the engine. It can be located under the battery tray sometimes and can be quite easy to get to. These types of sensors are relatively cheap to replace but are quite common in their failure rate. All being said, I would definitely recommend you use a diagnostic device first. It will not only save you time, it will also narrow down the fault more precisely.

Engine revving while stopped

On all older vehicles with a carburetor there is an adjustment for high and low idle. Adjust the high idle so that it isn't so high

89 cutlass cierra crank but wont start when wet out unless gas pedal is pushed

This should be a drive by wire vehicle meaning it has a cable for the throttle body. First thing would be to see if any error codes can be pulled up (most parts stores will do that for free.) Drive by wire versus the late model that use electronic control for the idle have a IAC or idle air control which when first started controls the idle air intake--all air is run by it to idle the vehicle when cold--

Usual symptoms are rather high idle when cold engine or even idle and RPM jumping up and down and stalling when cold.

Another way if idle does drop when cold is tapping the gas--engine will still run until hot. Means not usually a fuel pump issue.

You could also have if the vehicle is fuel injected a dirty Mass air flow sensor, a throttle position sensor, etc.

These can be if the vehicle has them cleaned using a special zero residue spray cleaner.

First have it scanned to see what if any errors it shows--the computer.

Revving up and down

Faulty idle air control valve. After you replace it you will need to reset the computer by disconnecting the ground cable on the battery for 30 seconds then re-install it and start it up it should run fine.

I have a 2002 durango 4.7. I have a hard time starting it hot or cold.when i get it started it idles fine for a few minuts and then rpm drop and wants to stall out,The truck runs great wile driving but...

First off, how new is your battery and how many miles on the D? Dodge vehicles are very sensitive to a failing battery. Have it load tested, and if is the least bit flaky, replace it.

After that, the TPS or throttle postion sensor is your next.

As far as the revving up and down above 3000 rpm goes, that is the PCM protecting the engine from over revving.

1 month ago replaced catalytic (sp?) convertor, battery, starter switch and now the check engine light came on and the car is revving high at times while driving

replacing these items won`t cause your problem.you will have to find out what code set the light and go from there.you don`t say if the revving is at idle or not if it is you could have a bad idle control motor or a cracked vacuum hose that acts up at certain times.even a bad throttle position sensor(tps),egr valve,so its important to know what set the light on.

Car is revving when clutch is in or idle, idle learn procedure

IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE Whenever the battery cables, the engine control module
(ECM), or the ECM fuse is disconnected or replaced, the
following idle learn procedure must be performed:
1. Turn the ignition ON for 5 seconds.
2. Turn the ignition OFF for 5 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition ON for 5 seconds.
4. Start the engine in park/neutral.
5. Allow the engine to run until the engine coolant is
above 185° F (85°C ).
6. Turn the A/C ON for 10 seconds, if equipped.
7. Turn the A/C OFF for 10 seconds, if equipped.
8. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transaxle,
apply the parking brake. While pressing the
brake pedal, place the transaxle in D (drive).
9. Turn the A/C ON for 10 seconds, if equipped.
10. Turn the A/C OFF for 10 seconds, if equipped.
11. Turn the ignition OFF. The idle learn procedure is
complete

Check gages lite goes on alterneter gage goes to maximum

check the voltage at the battery terminals
1 - when the engine is off should be 12.1V to 12.5V
2 - when the engine is idling should be 13.5V to 14.2V
3 - when the engine is revved to 2500 revs (approx is good enough)
voltage should be 14V to 14.8V

If 1 is lower, your battery is probably defective and should be tested.
if 2 or 3 is outside the ranges, the alternator is probably faulty.
NOTE The alternator test machines at Autozone etc... do not always diagnose faults. I have returned several that pass on those machines but cause faults on vehicles. especially where overcharging is the problem as those machines do not "accelerate" like a vehicle does. A poor battery could cause your problem as the alternator sometimes cannot provide enough current to maintain a charge and run the vehicle at idle. If putting your headlamps on at idle causes the gages to light the alternator is not keeping up with the charge... hope that helps...
