FOR a cracked Valve cover, $500? Find another mechanic. The valve cover might cost $40 and a new seal is $7 or $8 and 20 min to put it on. Now, if he actually talking about repairing the Head $500 is about right but not for a valve cover.

Hes giving you a fair labor cost, to remove and install a new or used valve cover, flag rate which is a manual repair shops used to charge labor, labor time for this job is 7.4 hrs. X there hourly labor cost = your labor cost for this job, this valve cover is press on, not like a regular valve cover that just bolts up, the Volvo dealer should have this, if not they can order it, it's not a cheap valve cover, you could also try this website for a used one, junkyarddog.com
Good luck

2001 Volvo S80 no oil pressure light blinking on and off at times but oil level is fine. Driving & started 2 tick. Smoke from dip stick and then car died. *******? Or fixable

It depends on the problem and the damage.
The engine can shut off if you lose oil pressure and still have an engine that can be fixed. The shut down is to prevent a fire in a wreck. If the engine computer detects the engine has stopped it kills power to the fuel pump. No oil pressure would make the computer think the engine may have stopped.
You would need to have a mechanic figure out why the oil pressure dropped and then check for internal damage such as bearings.

I have a 1973 Ford F100. There Is oil in the air cleaner. How can I fix this?

Make sure the PCV System is working

May pay to do a cylinder leak down test
(not compression) to see if you have blow
by past the rings

My 02 galant runs rough when put in gear but in idle runs okay it also surges up and down replaced the plug wires

Okay, lets start with the oil you found on spark plugs when you were replacing them. this oil is coming from the valve cover tube hole area, notice the plugs go into the holes in the valve cover, there is a gasket the goes around the top of the tubes and when it leaks it goes into spark plug hole, the valve cover needs replacing .
this will cause rough idle and running problems, after replacing valve cover gasket the holes must be cleaned, using crab cleaner, spray into holes and use air to blow out . this may need to be done a few times to get oil out .
after oil is removed . then remove spark plugs and wipe them clean.
The next step is to find the air (vacuum leak) , you said you hear it around intake tube. check for cracks or broken vacuum line. this leak will cause idle problems and driving problems,

Oil is leaking from enging

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

There are lot of reasons for engine leaks, here are the following:

- Loosen oil drain plug
- Cracked oil pan
- Worn out oil pan gasket
- Worn out valve cover gasket
- Worn out transmission oil seal

Please have the following checked and replaced if necessary. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Oil smell smells like it is burning oil last oil change was 3 months ago

Common causes of smelling "burning" oil are:
  1. a leak in the valve cover gasket. When oil leaks from the valve cover gasket, it will often burn off on the manifold.
  2. a blown oil seal causing oil to burn off on the exhaust system
  3. check your exhaust for "blue smoke" a sign that the engine is actually burning oil. Just guessing here but a 16 year old Volvo is bound to have quite a few miles on it.
I hope you found this post helpful in diagnosing your problem. Thank you for using Fixya! Greg

There is LOTS of oil covering my spark plugs, the other day I was driving on the hwy when it suddenly started slowing down even though my foot was on the pedal. I was going 70mph and then slowly dropped...

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
If there's oil on the sides of the engine valve cover then the valve cover gasket should be replaced. If there's oil on the spark plugs then the enginve valve seals must be replaced. Worn out valve seals can make the oil get in the plugs.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Pressure is building up under valve cover. its pushing oil out. when opening oil cap lots of air comes out

either oil ports are clogged not allowing drainage? or compression is bypassing the rings placing it in the crankcase assy area, Meaning worn cylender or cracked ring most likely

98 Volvo V70 GLT - Oil Pump or Valve Job?

Most common cause of ticking in these is the oil pick-up seals. Remove the pan and replace the oil pick-up tube seal, the two seals for the tube in the pan and the 2 O-rings on the right side of the pan. And dont use silicone to seal the pan back up, because it WILL leak, I highly recommend the Volvo sealant
