Question about 1984 Volvo 240 Series
Hello, i have a 1983 volvo 240. I recently had to drive it very hard to take my wife to the ER. After we left I noticed the car had almost no power. It's not smoking or knocking or making any strange noices. It cruises fine, but It's very slow getting up to speed. I checked the vacum hoses and spark plugs but nothing is out of place. Im thinking the timing belt jumped or skipped, I just havent had any time to really check it. Any help in helping me figure out what the proble could be would be greatley appreciated.

These cars had a few issues with the transmissions. Sometimes upgrading the software and flushing the transmission will help, sometimes a new valve body will fix the problem, but often the transmission will need replacement due to internal failure.
The first step is to have a shop read out all the fault codes, read all the service bulletins and tech notes from Volvo regarding the transmission problems and then make a decision based on all of that information.

Did you replace the plugs? How hot is the spark from the coil thin and blue? if it is big and orange it is a weak coil and should be replaced. If it is good try an other wire from a different car (do not put a spark plug in it) and see what the spark looks like if good put the plug in it and check the spark again if this is a good the wires are bad

timimg belts usually don't make noise, they break and the motor stops!! The noise could be coming from a bad water pump, powersteering pump, air compresser, alternater, leaky exhaust, leaky vacume lines. Check them out. Or, I don't know the condition of the engin. Has it been neglected and are the bearing going? More history would be helpful.
