It's a pretty easy fix. When I've seen these changed in the dealership they do it while the vehicle is on a lift. The PCM is located just in front of the transmission on the Radiator support rail. Remove the Two Electrical plugs from the top and unbolt the PCM. Slide it down and put the new one in place and connect the plugs. If your getting one of these from a junk yard make sure the vehicle you get it off of has the same accessories as yours. Power windows, cruise control and such. Dealerships actually get Blanks sent to them and they program them when they are installed. The same PCM may be used on several year models but the programming changes and has to be done at installation.

I am a single mom and received a quote last year to have the PCM replaced for $468.00, I have finally saved up the money to replace this and am told the price went up and now it will cost me $987.00. I would like to try and do this myself (with help), you mentioned programming which I was told only the dealer can do. Can the installer (me) do this programming and what does it consist of?

Unfortunately no, You can not do the programming yourself. If your tight on budget and can take the time to look you can get a used one at a salvage yard. Make sure if you do that the vehicle you take it off of has the same engine, Power accessories (Radio Doesn't matter I'm talking about Power Windows and such), and equipment. Most of the salvage yards can look in their computer and tell you what is compatible with your vehicle based on model and year. If you already have the ECM, you can check with the dealership to see what they would charge to install it. Last time I had one changed it took them less than an hour to program and install the new one. (ECM and PCM are the same thing. The names are interchangeable so don't let them confuse you with that.)

Hey, actually there are places that sell remanufactured, reprogrammed, reflashed pcm's for about $250 online. I own a dodge intrepid and have to replace my pcm also. I was told it would cost approx. $800-1000. Um, I don't think so. About to order mine tomorrow.

  • tonia_05 Oct 22, 2010

Also, I'm not sure if I'm going to install myself, but was quoted by my mechanic that he would install it for me for $100. If I don't do it, I may pay him just for peace of mind. But $250 $20 (s

Could this be a vapor lock problem?

If you haven't done so already, you would need to find out what is missing when it won't start to proceed.
Does it have spark to the plugs, fuel to the injectors, and so on.

I recently changed the engine of my Chrysler Intrepid 2001 2.7 V6 with a Chrysler Intrepid 2003 2.7 V6 engine. The engine runs fine except that the 2001 engine had an EGR sensor but the 2003 does not ....

you can talk to someone a the dealer(service manager/tech)to see if they can reprogram the pcm so it recognizes there is no egr on this motor

Code P0601 on my 2001 dodge Intrepid. I need to know about how much it will cost to fix.

Usually cause by a failed computer. Your computer costs $400--ouch! You may want to take the car to a dealer to get their opinion. Sometimes a reflash can solve the problem. If you want to see the culprit, your computer (called a PCM) is by the washer fluid refil and cruise control in the engine compartment.

What is a PCM R4896146AD?

the pcm is the computer, it should be located on the left front corner under the hood. if you replace it it will need to be programmed by the dealer. it controls all engine control functions of your vehicle.the r4896146ad is the part number and may have been superceeded by now, have the last 9 digits of your vin number available when you check with your dealer, it may be updatable or reprogrammable.

2002 dodge intrepid P0352 error code.

Look for an erroneous connection or a damaged terminal at the #2 ignition coil. To locate the #2 ignition coil look at diagram below.

1 - 3 - 5
< - - - Front of vehicle
2 - 4 - 6

If connection is good next you need to check for a short in the wires between the ignition coil and the PCM.

If there is no short next you need to turn the ignition switch to LOCK.
Disconnect the PCM.
Check the ignition control circuit for a short to ground
Inspect the ignition control circuit for a short to battery voltage

See whether there is any open in the ignition control.

If everything is good next step would be to replace the PCM.
