Question about 1997 Pontiac Sunfire
Also the back seat on most have a pull to access the inside of the trunk from inside the rear passenger area

There should be a black handle beside the driver's seat, closest to the door to pull and release the trunk lock. Let me know if you need anything else.

I'm assuming you don't have the electric latch...Since the key is turning, the piece of metal that connects the lock with the latching mechanism probably came off on the other end. You are going to have to destroy the lock. You can do that without hurting the rest of the car though. Drill it out so you can remove the locks internal pieces and stick a long regular screw driver in and turn the latch. The Fiero Store sells new locks.

SOURCE: 01 Pontiac Aztek trunk relase
This will sometimes work; either with help or alone, depending on the location of the latch, press the hatch in firmly and repeatedly near the latch with the flat hand while trying to turn the key or operating the remote release. If you can get it open, don't close it again until you have sprayed some lubricant into the latch mechanism; not WD-40 since this is good for loosening things but evaporates fairly quickly so provides only temporary help and the problem may return soon.
