Question about 2003 Ford Expedition

2 Answers

For the past few months a sound has been coming from under the hood. I brought it in to have it checked and was told it might be a power steering pump. it is a constant sound that goes up and down with speed of the car. it is a bit annoying. I had the belt replaced along with a few of the pulleys, but it made no difference. I have been next to other ford expeditions and excursions and have heard a similar noise. any ideas?

I want to know if a power steering pump could make this noise? if it means is going to brake ? or if it could be something else completely.

HI. To interpret what type of noise it is in this medium is quite hard, due to the fact that, I cant be there physically to hear the noise. With that said; When a power steering pump device fails or is in decline, it will make a very loud whining noise. This sound will fluctuate, depending on how high the rpm's are at any given time. It can be at low levels at idle and can be quite annoying at high idle when you are turning your steering wheel. You will here it the most when the steering wheel is being turned back and forth. This type of power steering gear damage is due to a breakdown in the internal structure and seal sector. This will cause an unstable pressure, thus, induce that ungodly sound. It is possible to have it rebuilt, but most dealerships will simply replace it.

I have two examples here in a couple of videos of bad pump noises. Take a listen to see if your pump sounds like these example sound bytes(videos)

Here is another example of a bad pump.

OK, if you don't like the sound, I would change more than a pulley, I would change the power steering pump (the whole thing). I doubt if the belt against the pulley itself would cause this problem.

Good luck on this repair.

It won't break unless it is really loud and leaks.

This was a on going problem for the malibu's, there in a factory recall on it but weather it would be good ?? the power steering on these was electric assist which is inline with the steering column, believe me, you will never have a complete loss of steering, it turns into "old school steering" were you need to use a little muscle to turn it. Three places to check for problems are, the 60 amp fuse in the power Distribution box under the hood , Connectors at the assist motor under drivers side dash, or oil pressure switch connector.

Car is difficult to steer

well it sounds like you got a broken belt under the hood, that spins the alternator and power steering and if that belt broke you wont have power steering and your alt will not charge the battery and the lights will come on, so pop the hood and check to see if the belt is still there and if it is check to see if it has tension on it, the tensioner could have let go and the belts not on,,,

Hyundai Accent 2001 making a loud-fan-like noise

POWER STEERING PROBLEM - CONTAINER CONSIST TWO LEVELS. SHOULD THE BOTTOM PART BE THE NORMAL COLOUR OF THE FLUID AND THE TOP PART APPEARS TO BE DIFFERENT THEN REMOVE THE CONTAINER AND CLEAN PROPERLY AS THERE IS A SIEVE BETWEEN THE TWO LEVELS WHICH IS BLOCKED. DRAIN OIL FROM POWER STEERING SYSTEM AND REFILL WITH NEW OIL.
iF BELTS WERE RECENTLY CHANGED THEN THE PROBLEM MIGHT LY BY ONE OF THE PULLEYS THAT IS WARN. MEANING THAT THE BELT INBEDDS TO DEEP INTO THE PULLEY AND CAUSE THE BELT TO SQUEL. SHOULD YOU POUR WATER ONTO THE BELT WHILE IT IS SQUELING IT PROVES THAT IT IS EITHER THE BELT THAT NEEDS REPLACELMENT OR ONE OF THE PULLEY PROVIDING THE BELT TENSION IS INSPECT

Horrible squeal. If my 740 made a horrible squeal I would be upset also. These ideas - timing belt has somehow slipped out of time. Easy check. One of the other belts are slowing the engine any of them can squeal: The alternator belt The power steering belt The fan belt. Does the noise occur only when driving? Does the engine sound normal when revving in neutral? Does turning on the lights or a/c affect the noise? Does the power steering work when car is standing? Is the squeal heard when turning the wheels. A logical diagnosis will identify and eliminate these easy to fix problems.
