I have a 1996 chevy K1500 Z71 with a brand new 383 stroker and a transmission that was rebuilt completely almost 2 years ago. Ever since the trans rebuild I've been noticing some fluid drips on my driveway. I've taken it back to them 3 times now and they say nothing is wrong with it and they change the fluid and filter. I've noticed that the trans runs fine for a few months then starts running weird and slipping so I check the fluid and its really low. I have been keeping an eye on it and basically this is whats going on. I check the fluid and its fine but the dip stick is really hard to pull out the first time like there is pressure built up. I'll stick it back in and pull it out and the fluid is all bubbly and I can't get a good reading. I found where the leak is and there is a small short black hose coming out of the top middle of the trans and fluid comes out of it slowly. I found the trans vent hose and that runs up the firewall. Its a different hose completely. I've looked in my Chilton's manual and I can't find this hose on the trans in the manual. A friend said that maybe the vent is clogged to see if i can force air back down into the vent hose, but I'm a little shy about doing that because if it is then whatever is clogging it will be pushed back down into the trans maybe messing it up. I don't know. My truck is the off road package and it has a stock trans fluid cooler on it. I was thinking that I should change it out for a bigger one and a new deep trans pan. Since there are bubbles in the fluid I'm thinking its getting too hot. Also I noticed that weather or not the trans is hot or cold the fluid on the dip stick reads the same level all the time. Anyone who can help please post something. I am sick and tired of this trans shop and if I can fix it myself I'm going to.
O.k. the small hose that you have coming out of the case is the trans vent. The one going up the firewall is for the transfer case. The trans vent should be hooked to the transfercase vent. You say you have a 383? Are you running the fuel injection system. Is this a 4L60E (the stock transmission). If you have fluid coming from the vent, the transmission is getting too hot. Replace the cooler. Do away with the radiator cooler and add one to the front in front of the condenser.

Do you have a check engine light coming on? Sounds like trans temp sensor. Have it scanned, it is an electrical issue to the transmission.

you could bring it up on tdc on comp stroke and make your own mark on crank pulley and block then at least you know where tdc is and google some 383's that have close to same equip as you and see what degree they are running or just play with it and see how it runs .

Only if you install the proper computer controls to go along with it, look to Summitracing.com for aftermarket transmission controls for intalling new model transmisions into classic cars...

I have a 4L60E in my GMC and it blew i replaced it, everywhere i went said they are year spacific. If you cant find a 4L60E look for a M30 Transmission most are in Yukons and Surburbans but they are out there. Make sure its from a 1500. Mine runs great now

Yes I have fuel injection and my transmission was rebuilt with corvette servos and the www.eatmyshift.com monster transmission rebuild kit was installed .... or at least that's what I payed for and was told. I was thinking that the trans was getting too hot so I guess this weekend I'll be pulling the stock trans cooler off the condenser and replacing it with a bigger one. Thanks for the quick reply csmock132.
