when you turn the ignition on dose the needle move ? even just a bit should jump. if don't jump it may be the gauge its self not working.. if you model has the display type I.E miles left of fuel check that on the display should say how meany mile of fuel you have left to drive with.
Locate the fuse box underneath the drivers side steering wheel and replace the instrument cluster fuse. If your fuse comes out ok then the float inside your gas tank is stuck.
Yes there is a recall for erratic gauge readings. They will supply new instrument cluster and labor to install it at no charge to you. Tell the service writer that your gauges only work sometimes and they'll help you out. worked for me!!!
You need to replace cluster, 99-02 Silverado GMC all will work even if it has a trans temp truck is pre wired for it. I put a 02 Denali cluster in my 01 silverado no problems. GM can reprogram hours and odometer if you want.
