Both.
Mcpherson struts front and rear.
The shock forms part of the strut.

It uses a simplified strut, but a strut is a shock, it just has a spring on the shock instead of being counted elsewhere, it is called a coil over shock

Does the 97 vw golf gl 2.0 have 4 struts for suspension or is it struts in the front and shocks in the back?

struts in the front and shocks in the rear, the rear shocks have coil springs over the shocks, like the front struts, but you dont need to use a spring compressor tool on them which is neccessary on struts

90,000 miles is not an uncommon mileage to replace the struts and shocks. If the shocks are leaking oil, or the car doesn't ride well, that is a good sign of needing replaced. You can also push down on the front or rearend, if it bounces up and down more than once, that would be another sign that it's time to replace them.

sounds like a broken strut spring if so you can replace the entire strut as an assembly with a spring or just the spring

How to change Front shocks on a jetta

You'll need to unbolt the top of the strut and the bottom of the strut at the steering knuckle. You'll need a spring compressor to compress the spring before seperating the strut from the strut mount and spring. You may want to replace the strut mount also. MAKE SURE THE SPRING IS COMPRESSED ENOUGH BEFORE REMOVING THE TOP STRUT MOUNT!!!!

How to install rear shocks for 1998 bmw z3

They're not shocks they're struts. It requires spring compressors and air impact tools.

Unless you have them and the know how how to compress strut springs. don't do it. It can be dangerous.

It's why it's a lot of money to have it done.

Front strut problems?

if you wont to know how the spring is held in you need to comres it and push the top mount down the shock then you will see a small retaining ring that fits in a reses on the shock and thats all that holds it together
