Question about 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

1 Answer

I have a 2001 Alero 3.4L V6; I have replaced the intake gasket the engine itself and countless other repairs but recently the car has been leaking coolant and it has also been overheating. I just replaced the water pump after a mechanic told me there was a leak coming from the back of the water pump. Upon replacing the water pump the car was still overheating. We then bled the car through the upper valve and it seemed like antifreeze was getting to the engine block. Well now it is overheating again! And now there is a lound clunking noise coming from somewhere in the car I don't know if it's the radiator or the motor. And again the car leaked out a massive amount of antifreeze and then when I added water and bled the car the temp went down again. There is also steam coming from around the cap of the reservoir and I'm not sure if that's supposed to be happening either...

The first thing i would do is put the coolant system under pressure with
Cooling System And Pressure Cap Tester. if there are any leaks you will find them with that tool. Also check the oil and see if coolant is mixing with it, if there is you may have a bad head gasket or possibly a cracked engine block.

Offmy 2000 oldsmobile alero over heats n shuts off

if it's a V6 then you prob have intake gskts/head gskts leaking coolant to cylinder and causing it to hydro lock, filling cylinder with coolant and filling radiator with cylinder pressure causing coolant to blow out of radiator and reduces your cooling of engine.....see a mechanic looking at a big repair bill or engine swap

I have a 2000 alero v6 thats losing coolant but cant seem to see anywhere and no smoke comes out of the tail pipe and the oil level doesnt go up. so not sure where else the coolant is going. as well as...

I had the same problem on a 2002 Alero V6. I found the coolant was leaking at the intake manifold on the left front of the engine. I tightened the intake bolts (which were very loose) and solved my coolant leak problem.

I have a 96 grand am and it started leaking coolant from somewhere around the manifold, i can't tell exactly where it's coming from. Does anyone know it that could be the termostat?

If its a v6 engine and the leak is by the intake manifold, then you need to replace the intake manifold gasket. This is a very, very common problem on all of GM's v6 engines. It will cost you about $350-$400 for this repair.

Engine size of 2001 olds alero

Common engine size is the 3.4 V6 on the Alero but there was also a optional 2.4 liter I4 available. The V6 will have stamped in the engine upper intake 3400.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

I have replaced all 4 ox senors before I replaced intake man. gaskets. It is a 97 chevy W/Truck with a V6 auto, auto trans. 2WD. now service engine soon light came on after about 200 miles, it will go off...

First did you clear all the fault codes after your repairs? The reason I ask is po131 is bank one oxygen sensor, po174 is engine lean from faulty oxygen sensor, and po171 is engine lean condition, possibly from vacuum leak (intake manifold gasket?), pcv valve, etc. To check for vacuum leak at intake, start engine and gently spray starting fluid around intake gasket. If rpm raise slightly while doing this then there is a vacuum leak(stay away from air filter intake and housing though), and the gasket will need to be replaced again.

My 1999 alero is overheating and engine coolant is leaking

hi, i dont know about the dipstick, but your overheating problem is most likely to be the thermostat...sounds like its stuck in the closed position, not allowing colder water to circulate, hence the overheating.......needs changing
