Have a 1996 dakota 3.9 automatic, transmission sticks in 1st gear unless you let up on gas after warm it starts out in 2nd gear

Sounds like a stuck governor valve in the transmission. 2 or 4wd?

I need a diagram of a 1996 toyota camry automatic


To play it safe have the TPS checked out by another repair shop .If they say its ok then its the shift solenoids.

My 1994 Ford Explorer automatic transmission won't shift from 1st to 2nd ... BUT will shift into 3rd if I run it in 1st gear to sufficient speed then remove accelerator pressure ... wait 3-5 seconds and...


Hi there,

As your Auto transmission is fully electronic, it could be anything from faulty sensors sending incorrect signals to the trans computer, or faulty internal components. Your best bet is to have the trans computer scanned for 'fault codes' (as the computer monitors and retains all faults) by your local Ford dealership.

This process will identify the likely component/s which are causing this problem.

My guess is, there may be a problem with the 2nd clutch (yes that's right, automatics have internal clutches!), input and/or output shaft switches sending incorrect signals to the computer.

But, there could be so many other possibilities....so, I recommend you get the codes scanned and go from there.....

Hard shift from 1st to 2nd, then 2nd to 3rd.


Dont think they changed it yet but the older chrysler units had a rod that went from the throttle linkage to the transmission (maybe a cable now)...If you lengthen the rod it will increase shift pressure and give you an earlier shift.

What you need to check is the transmission release bearing because if there is a clearance on the release bearing you will encounter this problem and also check the transmission oil.
