U may know this but just in case,... you can have it rebuilt at a reputable alternator shop for approximately half your lower estimate. Maybe less.Good Luck

This is often an occurance when it comes to quality of parts and the shop buying them. If you look on the Auto Zone site you will see one for about $215 and $205. Let me know if this is helpful.

Well there are different prices for the alternator and labor.

I remember getting an alternator for a 1988 Oldsmobile where the price ranged from $56 to $130 in the year 1995. The labor to install would normally be $60 or so for a total of $110 to $210 for that vehicle in that time frame.

The alternator's warranty can vary from just 30 days to 90 days to 1 year typically, to a Lifetime Warranty.

I would check if the warranty period was the same for both prices.

Parts that are used in Lifetime Warranty alternators, whether or not the alternator lasts that long, can be better in many cases than parts (like the voltage regulator for instance) that are put into 1 year warranted alternators.

If you are going on a long trip, I wouldn't trust a 1 year warranted alternator as much as a Lifetime Warranted Alternator.

It should only take about 1 hour to 1.5 hours to change an alternator on top, and maybe 2 hours or more for alternators located further down into the engine cavity.

I would expect an alternator on an '02 Taurus to cost more than it did for my 1988 Oldsmobile, by the way.:)

There will be variations in the price for later model Ford vehicles such as yours.

That is to be expected.

How to chg alternator on 2002 ford taurus 24v dohc 3.0

ctionsThings You'll Need
  • Flywheel holding tool
  • New alternator
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
    • 1Determine which alternator your Ford Taurus will need. You'll want to be sure the new alternator is compatible with your Taurus's engine. Models made from 1986 to 1991 have a 2.5 L HSC, 3.0 L Vulcan or 3.8 L engine. The 2.5 L engine was dropped for 1992 to 1995 models, and post-1995 models will have a 3.0 L engine.
    • 2Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Release the tension on the accessory drive belt so that you can remove the drive belt from the pulley.
    • 3Take off the mounting bolt on the right side of the alternator with a socket wrench and remove the bracket for the power steering hose. Remove the mounting bolts on top of the alternator, the front passenger wheel and tire assembly and the front fender splash shield. Remove the alternator splash shield with a socket wrench and take off the inspection cover for the torque converter.
    • 4Mount a tool to hold the flywheel so you can remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley. Lower the alternator so you can unplug its electrical connections. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor and Oxygen sensor connector. Remove the lower alternator mounting bolt and B+ connector nut to remove the alternator.
    • 5Install the new alternator assembly by reversing the above procedure. Use a torque wrench to tighten the B+ connector nut to 71 in. lbs. and the lower alternator bolt to 18 foot pounds. Torque the crankshaft pulley bolt to 74. foot pounds, the upper alternator bolts to 18 foot pounds and the nut for the power steering hose bracket to 13 foot pounds.

Does a 1996 mercury sable and 2001 ford taurus have the same engine

Its possible. In this time span Ford used two different motors, the overhead valve (OHV) Vulcan V6, and the Duratec 24V V6, which will bear the 24v DOHC badge on the front fender.

More like a rsidual draw with the key off. Try disconnecting he battery at night and see if that helps. Your car may run rough for 10 miles due to the computer memory being cleard with the ground cable disconnected.

Shaun just answered my question on a thermostat change on a 3.0 in my 1998 Taurus. Is the answer the same if it is the 24V DOHC?

Hi, this is Shaun again. The answer is the same for a 24v DOHC. Coolant systems are pretty simple and haven't evolved much with different vehicles and motors. It's pretty much the same process with all vehicles.
