Question about 1992 Cadillac Eldorado

I keep going through new starters. They work ok

I keep going through new starters on my '92 Eldorado. They work ok for a short period of time & then for absolutely no reason I go to start the car & I get nothing. I have even replaced them with factory new GM starters on (2) occasions. I have been to (4) different mechanics with no success in solving this problem. You just never know when it is not going to start.

Sounds like a bad starter soloniod or a bad ignition switch .. most likely the solonoid if it hasnt been changed ... below is what it looks like and a couple places it can be purchased ... usually the contacts inside the solonoid wear to the point they just barely make contact .. sometimes they dont anymore ... on some solonoids you could just take it apart and rotate the contact so that unused contact area is now seen by the contactor ... .. the contacts are part of the bolts where power is connected ... a new solonoid isnt expensive so is probably the best bet ... if the contacts are worn then you will hear a click when you turn on the starter ...if yoiu dont hear a click then there could be an open coil in the solonoid or maybe a bad ignition/starter switch that operates that solonoid coil ... there are ways of junping the solonoid main contacts .. in this case the starter will run but not engage (you will get sparks) .. at least it checks the starter ... the other way is to provide power to the solonoid coil .. this should cause it to operate and engage the starter (make sure car is in park) .. if that works then suspect the ignition switch .. if it doesnt work or works once in a while then change the solonoid ...

Is it the starter or is it a bad starter ring on the flywheel causing the problem of to much strain on the motor. you might want to check the voltage going to the starter perhaps its getting to much and burning out the windings? After you take off the starter do u test it and see why its not working? Perhaps you can back track from there. Good luck.

Change starter wire on 92 eldorado

A starter motor problem won't cause the car to stop, You need to make sure that the earth leads from the battery to the body and to the motor are tight and that the surface they bolt to is clean, there could also be an issue with the electrical switch on the back of your ignition.

I have a 1991 eldorado,it will not start back up when i go to store after about 3 to 4 min it start that's goes on all the time

Sounds to me that a starter may be going bad. This is a common problem for Cadillac.
My 1990 and 1997 Cadillac Devilles (one a Limo) does this all the time.

I would check the connections at the battery to ensure they are clean and tight, though, before going for a new starter.

My 1993 cadillac eldorado is cranking slow and i just change the alternator

If the battery is fully charged but the starter is slow, the starter may have an internal short or may just be worn out. Make sure your battery is fully charged and the battery terminals are clean and tight though before buying a new starter.

The van won't start and it keeps blowing the 20 amp engine fuse when you try starting it.

Get under the car and check the starter. Ok really grab a hammer and hit the starter a couple times. Try starting it again. If it dont work you should replace the starter. The starter maybe pulling too much power from the battery trying to start the car. Good Luck!

My 2000 Eldorado ETC, 88K suddenly has stopped running. Oil and fuel are OK. It has started for a short period of time, and suddenly quits. Headlights work, radio does not...battery is OK... ....grateful...

Take it to a mechanic. This has happened to me on two separate occasions due to different malfunctionings. My first encounterance with this problem ( shutting down while driving), turned out to be a malfunctioning crank sensor in the engine. The problem was"fixed" after I took it to a mechanic and replaced that. Btw, it took them a long time to figure out that was the problem. A Few years later to about 2 months ago, my car had the same problem again. Only this time, the problem was with the fuel injection system. So I ended up having to replace the whole fuel pump assembly at the dealership, which was quite costly.

So, take it to a mechanic to pinpoint the problem. It can be a several number os things.
