Question about Ford Explorer Sport

98 Ford Explorer timing chain and engine trouble

I have a 98 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0 4x4. Has 194,000 miles but had just replaced transmission and new fuel pump. Then timing jumped and damaged engine values. I drove it home and once there, the motor would not turn over. Saved myself a wrecker bill but I think that may be why the engine is damaged. I have a 96 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 with good motor just bad frame(broke due to rust). Can I use that motor to replace the one in the 98?

Does a 2001 ford explorer sport have a timing belt or timing chain?

being that you most likely have a 4.0l s.o.h.c. engine you have a timing chain which only needs inspection around 100,000 miles for excessive wear on chain guides and leaking cam seals. this setup tends to last far beyond that mileage without any maintenence. if this was helpful please leave positive rating.

I have a 2005 Explorer XLT with 66,000 miles. Is it advisable to change the timing belt at this time . The car is running great.

Does your motor have a timing belt or chain? If it is a belt and it was mostly highway running you should be able to get quite a few mor miles out of it. As a rule of thumb, city driving, jackrabbit starts, lots of cold weather driving(bellow -20f) and towing belt should be changed at around 80,000 miles. If is light duty driving 100,000 miles. If it is a chain you might never need to change it.

Considering buying 2003 ford explorer sport with 97,000 miles on it. Have heard that SOHC engines have problems with timing chains. Any advice?

Best to read all the explorer complaints here on fix-ya. Fords ar a money pit. And Chevy cavaliers exceed their allowance of problems. If you get it, I hope it serves you well and you are pleased with it.

Maintenance questions in ref to Ford Sport Track, 2004

You have a 4.0L SOHC engine which has 4 timing chains. No belts. The only thing you have to worry about is the chain tensioners breaking. You'll get engine noise at idle from underneath or it'll sound like pinging at 2200 to 2700 rpms.

01 explorer timing chains

I may be comming off totally half cocked but on my Ford Explorer Sport I don't believe there are any "Timing Chains" on this vehicle. I just have a Serpentine belt that ties / runs everything together. My "older" vehicles had timing chains to where I pulled the grille, radiator out to gain access to the front of the block.
Funny thing is.......I had more of a headache replacing the spak plugs on my Explorer Sport than the Serpentine Belt. (Go Figure)
