Hello! Do you have a digital volt meter..We need to perform a few tests in order to isolate the problem...The rear wheel steering system parts are costly...If you can gain access to the switch connector by gently prying it out would make testing a lot easier...Otherwise, access can be gained by jacking up the rear of the vehicle...Procedure is as follows...Do not allow the jack to touch the rear steering gear when lifting...Damage will occur to the rubber boots...Raise and support vehicle...Remove spare...You can now gain access to the Rear Wheel Steering Control Module...

Test procedure to follow....Guru........saailer

Hello! Procedure for Select Switch Connector...Wire colors are...Dark Green/White...Dark Blue...Orange...Light Blue...Tan...And Purple/White...NOTE; When testing for voltage a digital voltmeter must be used to avoid damage to circuitry...

#1...Remove connector from switch...Set ohm meter on X10 scale...Read across the pins of the switch that connect to the Dark Green/White and the Dark blue...With two wheel steering selected record resistance...Select four wheel...Record resistance...Plug the connector back onto the switch...Take a safety pin...Push it into the rear of connector on the Dark Blue wire...Connect + probe of volt meter to the safety pin...Meter set to read + 5 volts...Connect - probe to ground...Turn ignition key on...Do not start...Must read + 5 volts...

Send results................PS; When you select 4 wheel steering does the mode indicator light?

    Saailer

the indicator light is on for 2 wheel steering but the light does not change to indicate 4ws when i press the button, the light indicating 2ws stays on. and yes i think i can get a digital voltage reader so ill try that and let you kno.

    thank you,

Hello! Lack of mode indication is pointing at the switch itself...Test will validate...Saailer

  • Jason b Jul 20, 2010

hey sorry i forgot to mention the indicator light will change from 2 to 4ws when key is on and engine is not running but will go back to right back to 2 again when the engine is started

    thanks

hi where is the select switch connector? i took off the spare and can see the rear steering module but the wires coming from the moduel are not the same colour and there are more wires also than you explained there are 4 sets of wires coming from the module there is one set of wires that goes to the steering gear or motor would that be the connector switch??

    Hello! Sorry about that...I did not include connector #'s and size...There are 4 connectors...C-1=16 pins...C-2=3 pins...C-3=3 pins...And C-4= 24 pins...C-4 is the correct connector...The large one...With key off...Disconnect the 24 pin connector...The 2 wires...Dark Green/White and Dark Blue are pins 9 and 4...Measure the resistance in 2 wheel...Record...Measure the resistance in 4 wheel...Record...If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask...I am here!...saailer

Hello! I'll wait for the results before testing voltage.....saailer

  • Jason b Jul 20, 2010

the four connectors have the following amount of pins c-1:3 c-2:3 c-3:11 and c-4 :16 c-2 and c-3 come from same wire but that conneccts to steering motorso which is it

  • Jason b Jul 20, 2010

and also u said do test with key off but i cannot change from 2 to 4 with key off

  • David Burbee
    David Burbee Jul 20, 2010

Hello! C-4 is the correct connector...It is a 24 pin connector with 17 wires...Disconnect C-4 and measure across Pins 4&9..Press the switch then read the meter...Do this a couple of times and record the meter readings...The first test is without voltage...It is to test the switch's ability to function...It has resistors inside...Set the meter on X10 ohm scale...After this first test ...then turn the key on and take the voltage readings...Hang in there we'll find it.....Saailer

  • Jason b Jul 20, 2010

ok got ya ill try that out tomoroow and let u kno results

  • Jason b Jul 22, 2010

hi i done those tests. there was no ohm registered on X10 scale so i put it on X1000 and it showed 1.986 i 2ws and 1.986 in 4ws. the voltage showed 3.32 v with key off and 3.32v when i turned key on

Hello! Nice job on the readings...The Selector Switch is defective...Contacts are not closing...This is a dealer item and probably expensive...I suggest you visit the local used parts yard...Bring your meter with you...Set it on the same ohm meter scale...What ever you read in 2WS...You should read 1/2 of that reading in 4WS...Been a pleasure working with you...Saailer

Hello! The readings are correct...That eliminates a large hunk...Perhaps the end of the rainbow is the following...The names of the following two fuses are...ELEC (15A)...And CLUSTER (10A)...Locate them...Also, the one I mentioned before...The one you couldn't find...It is called the INDIC fuse (10A)...

Disconnect all wiring from alternator...Turn the key to on...Is there voltage on the dummy wire? Pull the INDI fuse....Is there voltage on the dummy wire? Pull the ELEC fuse...Is there voltage in the dummy wire? As you pull fuses...Leave them out...I'm here...It's 5 pm EDT...If you can...How much time can you dedicate this evening...I want you to sleep in peace tonight....A statement from a professor I once had...
"What happens if you short two randomly selected wires together"? The answer is; "God only knows".
These type of problems are real tough to find...I believes we be close...Saailer

  • Jason b Jul 23, 2010

hi i assume that stuff about the fuses was not ment for me lol. so the selector switch is what it would be called at a gm shop? and is that the switch on the dash you are talking about or not?

    thank you

Hello! Oh Lord...Could it be time for Shady side rest home? It's not for you...Sorry about that...

Yes, It's the switch in the dash that changes steering from 2 to 4...It is the Mode Selector Switch...If you tell a GM parts house guy/gal they will know...Saailer

04' GMC Sierra quadrasteer, trec fuse 30a blows when trying to engage 4wd. I replace fuse, start truck and 4wd auto is lit up but if I press 2h, 4h, or 4 low it blows. What should I do or look for?

Wild guess here, had a similar problem on my 2000 4x4 blazer, has an electric motor on transfure case to swith it into 2h, 4h, and 4l, would blow the fuse every time when switching, did is to replace the motor. Just confirm your fuse that is blowing feeds that.

How do I use the 4 wheel drive on my GMC Yukon 2004. What dash button turns the 4 wheel drive on?

Hi, depending on the vehicle, there can be different controls. Standard control, 4hi, use in slippery conditions, never on dry pavement. Just push the button, and it will engage. 4low is for extreme conditons and the transmission must be in neuteral to engage 4lo. If you have auto 4wd button, just press the button in slippery conditions. If you have a denali, it is all wheel drive, and there are no buttons to push. So, depending on the model, there are multiple ways, but pushing the button engages it. Good luck...Goop
