They need to get it to a shop ASAP sounds like a head gasket. Trouble is if they keep running it hot it will wreck the engine.

The head gasket has gone bad and the engine is over heating, if driven any longer. The engine will need to be replaced if not, the damage is gone to far for repairs and the engine will need to be replaced.
Sorry for the bad news and hope your friend makes it home safe. Thank you for using fixya and god luck

If i just put water and no coolant could this make my car over heat

No your car will not overheat, but it is advisable to my 50% coolant on the water to prevent deposits of rust and other debris that may affect the effectiveness of the cooling system.

Should i bleed the thermostat to keep light from blinking for coolant

NO cooling systems do not need to be bleed they are vented into the recovery bottle . When the coolant expands when hot it goes into the recoverry system and when it cools it gets drawn back into the raitator through the hose that comes from the radiator and goes to the recovery bottle . Dose the light say ckeck gauges if so the problem is eighter with the antifreeze or the engine oil check the level of bolth . If the oil is OK and full then try flushing the cooling system . Antifreeze olny last about 5 years and chevy uses that orange antifreeze if you change it make sure the new stuff is compatable with chevy standards it should say on the container Good luck

The radiator was emptied out and i want to add antifreeze and water? there are 2 areas that say antifreeze goes here?

  • One is the radiator and the other is an overflow tank. Sometimes anti freeze will back pressure a bit and need somewhere to go and other times the antifreeze gets low in the radiator. That is the purpose of the radiator.
  • Put the antifreeze in the radiator fist and then add to the reservoir. Pay attention to the cold/hot level fill on the overfill tank.
  • You need to find out where all that antifreeze went to if the radiator was empth. Pull the dipstick and look for a chocolate milk look on the oil. This would be a head gasket or a cracked head.
  • Otherwise keep an eye out for a leak and repair it soon.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Check engine light on, temp gauge in hot position, cold air blowing in compartment

If the temp gauge is hot and cold air is blowing in the passenger compartment, then I would say there would be a blockage or series of blockages in the cooling system. Flush it out and refill with new antifreeze/coolant mixed at 50/50 water to coolant concentration.

Check the codes to see what else may be wrong with the engine.

Temperature Gauge Hot on Cold Start?

It probably needs a thermostat check coolant fluid level make sure it has enough coolant then replace thermostat make sure antifreeze has a 50% water 50% antifreeze mixture.

What are all the reasons why a vehicle overheat? Why did the gauge needle didn't show the overheat?

The sensor is in the coolant flange on the end of the cylinder head. The coolant flange is made of plastic and after time they will leak coolant. If no water is in the flange the sensor will not read hot.

Coolant system

If your coolant level is dropping, I would suggest that you take a good look at the water pump. That is a very common coolant leakage probelm area on your vehicle. I change 2-3 a week.
Hope this helps.

Heat gauge shows hot , have to add antifreeze although no leak

Very common fault is head gaskets.  causing coolant consumption and bubbles in radiator.  Run vehicle, have a friend accelerate once or twice hard, while you smell exhaust for sweet smell of burning coolant.
