Question about 1996 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

No power in acceleration

We've taken off the catalytic converter, replaced plugs, put in new oil, filter and more things. Changed belts and still no power. Going up a hill takes time. Once you get going straight it will accelerate, but any small hill it takes a bit for it to go to second gear. It is an Automatic. Also, the lights on the interior, the blinkers and others seem to have a short in them. We've checked all the fuses and everyone is ok. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Thank you for answering. It turned out to be a bad Coil Housing...Now it drives like a dream. The only thing now is trying to figure out why, the dashlights wont work and why the gas gauge won't work.

My Pontiac grand prix se has no power

Where to start,
- Check exhaust
-- Blueish smoke, Could be Fried Cylendar Rings, Verify With Compression test - Also check if the oil level is going down
-- White Smoke, Could be spark plugs, wires, or coil pack
--- Check oil for a white or brownish foam, if so head or intake gasket.

- if 3.4L, intake gaskets are a common issue, sometimes you can hear it sucking if you accelerate from the throttle body. (Be carefull, moving parts!)

- See if vehicle is having a problem with climbing over a certain RPM, If so
-- Plugged Fuel Filter
-- Plug Catalytic Converter
-- Plugged Air Filter

- If automatic
-- See if transmission is kicking down a gear during harder acceleration.

Also note that a bad TPS (Throttle Position Censor) located on the throttle body can cause this as well. Often felt as very poor acceleration or studdering during acceleration.

Failing O2 censor can cause an issue like this as well, unhooking the censor completely will put the car in a failure default setting that will allow it to operate close to normal, but make sure you replace it if it has failed to avoid replacing Catalytic Converter as well.

Start there, but it could be many other things as well. If check engine light is on, get it read. or pick up a code reader and read it yourself.

Good Luck

Very loud squeal when accelerating and loss of power

How many miles? V6? Have you had a tune up(spark plugs changed..AT LEAST)? Should be changed about every 60,000 miles, according to the manual. Does your engine burn oil? Check your intake rubber tube, vac lines, pcv tube for crack. Hopefully your catalytic converter isn't the problem due to above...

This could be a bad ground on the ECM. When it is in park it is open loop. When you put it in gear, the ecm goes closed loop with the oxygen sensors and with no ground it dies.

Thats the same EXACT symptoms my moms truck was having! Until i hollowed out the catalytic converters! Obviously, if you have emissions, you have to replace them(We don't).

I have a F-150 that has issues that will not let the truck accelerate when you get onthe gas. Had it in the shop and they said it was the catalytic converter. I have taken it to 3 muffler shops, all said...

you need to go back to the shop that said the catalytic converter was bad and have them verify the repair and put a converter on the truck and verify the repair!
