I think the following will work on your truck. if it doesnt then the knob might have a setscrew.
1. turn the knob to the on position and pull it out as if you wanted them on for highway driving during the day.

2. You should be able to see a little notch /(like a missing tooth space),
3. Insert a flathead screw driver, paper clip, or something small enough to fit in the notch.
4. Being careful not to break the light house, Have one hand hold the black part of the headlight housing while you pop out the light switch knob.
5. Once you have the knob out you can do what you need to do.

Hello. If the knob is off the shaft you can reattach it with one minute epoxy. The stuff works great. available at any home depot or auto parts store. If the knob is intact but the finish is off, you can paint it. just get a small can or jar of automotive paint of the color you want and tape off the parts that you do not want to paint. j.

I need to take the finish knob off so I can pull the dash off, the knob is preventing me from getting the dash all the way off

  • senditto Jul 20, 2010

I am just trying to get the knob off without breaking it. I need to get it off, so I can get the dash off. The knob is the only thing keep the dash from coming off. I will need to put the knob back on after I put the dash back together.

Cannot get the windshield wiper and light knobs off in order to remove the cover. They do not just pull off?

For everyone's future reference, the windshield wiper knob has a spring metal clip holding the knob to the shaft.
There is a small slot under the knob. Starting at the back edge of the knob, use a small screwdriver to push into that slot in the same direction you want to remove the knob.
That will push the metal clip and release the knob.

How to take off the headlight knob inside the truck

There are two methods typically used:

First involves a small clip at the back of the knob itself. I presume that you have the next method.

2nd is a button on the switch itself. About midway down the light switch is a spring loaded button. Pull the lights to on, press this button and the knob and shaft will be released. Then unscrew the light switch and you can remove it.

Replacing the light switch on a 89 mercury grand marquis

I have had to change this switch. You probably got the dash torn apart down to the piece that the knob on the light switch will keep you from getting that piece off? yes? There is a pin on the light switch frame that has to be depressed. Once you do that, you can pull the knob and shaft out of the switch assembly. After that, the plastic panel will come off and you can R & R the switch. Save that shaft and knob, you will need it for the new switch, unless the new switch uses a different size shaft arragement. Then you may have to but a corresponding shaft/knob assembly. I made the mistake of slicing the knob in half with a Dremel cutter and had to buy a new knob for the shaft.
