I have a 1998 Cadillac STS that is not liking hills. It does perfectly fine until I start going up and hill and then the temp just starts climbing..

We recently replaced the radiator a couple months ago. The transmission is only about two years old and was replaced by the dealership. We have flushed the cooling system and have made sure that there is no blockage. The car was running perfectly fine until I drove to my mothers house and went up a huge hill and now it only does it up hills. Level ground or down hill it is perfectly fine.

Hi!!

There are a few thing to check:

Water pump worn/leaking
Clogged up radiator,
Faulty Thermostat
Faulty Electric Radiator Fan
Worn or incorrect gap spark pluggs
Vacuum leak
Dirty Air Filter
Sticky PCV valve.
Worn Ignition components.

Take vehicle to an AutoParts to get computer scanned for TDC Codes,.this way it will be easy to pin point the problem.

Good Luck!!

I'm sticking to my first choice, the Worn Water Pump. You didn't mention having replaced it recently. The pump itself is only $49, so it would not hurt to replace it. Also I wanted to bring to your attention the following GM note I found while researching overheating causes

    NOTE:
Because the engine block and radiator are aluminum, make sure the antifreeze solution is approved for use in cooling systems with a high aluminum content. GM recommends the use of a supplement/sealant 3634621 or equivalent, specifically designed for use in aluminum engines to protect the engine from damage.

I found this article written by one of my felow Certified Mechanics and I think it solve your overheathing problem:

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose). The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

Hi,

First you will need to get the cooling system checked/flushed incase you have some blockage in there.
Then you will need to ensure that your thermostat is operating properly.

After this if these are ok, then you will need to get the cooling system pressure tested to ensure the head gasket is sealing ok.

You could also have problems with the transmission control system which is causing the transmission to labour the engine, making it work harder while hill climbing.
But get the pther things checked first and get back to me if you require further information.

Thanks

Jason

94 Cadillac Eldorado overheating uphill

This actually sounds like your motor is not the problem it sounds as
thougth your transmission is in need of work. if you have flushed your
system also may look at your oil pump system as the change in pitch of the road to climb hills may infact be pulling sludge against the sump
tube screen and plugging the oil pump. these are the only two reasons I can see for this to happen if system only dose this when climbing a hill
.

My 2002 jeep grand cherokee will sometimes over heat when climbing big hills. It has been an intermitten problem. A shop replaced the clutch fan, water pump and thermostat. After repaired ran it well over...

you mention big hills, and other wise no problem, you may be taxing the transmission , have a trans cooler installed, it may cure all your problems, and good for the trans, heat is the trans biggest killer

Have a scan tool put on it and see what codes come up. It sounds like a knock sensor to me, but lets get that free scan at autozone, or Pep boys & see what it says.
