Have the system checked for fault codes, you can have Aamco transmission diagnose this for free, which is what i suggest, but as a 35 year Ford dealer tech I really suspect the transmission has failed due to a valve body problem or leak in the fluid passages or a failed fluid pressure pump.

Hi,

You have a problem with either the Transmission speed sensor or the shift position sensor, I would say the speed sensor.

Get a workshop to check these 2 sensors.

If it was a major problem in the transmision it would be faulty at all times not just intermittant.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need more information.

Thanks

Jason

Hi!!

Take vehicle (if possible) to AutoZone or Checkers for a trouble code scan or borrow a code scanner to see if the computer can tell you about the problem. If no codes show up, I suggest you do the following:

It seems that you have sticky valves or plugged/dirty filter. Service the transmission (change filter and fluid), while you have the trans. pan and filter off, remove the valve body and dip it gasoline while pushing the valves in and out with a non-metal object until they woirk smoothly. Drain the valve body, make sure there is no gas left in, use a blow gun on all the fluid passages to clear them, then pour a little transmission fluid and play with the valves again.

When time to replace fluid, add 1 qt. of Rislone stop slip and leak sealant, that stuff works very good on old trannys.

Good Luck!!

Why does my 98 ford contour only drive in reverse

I'm assuming you have an automatic transmission. It sounds like there is an internal fault in the transmission itself. You'll have to take out the trans and take it to a shop to have it repaired, unless you're experienced on this kind of work and have the special tools and equipment required.

98 mustang GT transmission locked in reverse

This could be a linkage problem. I am not familiar with this transmission, does the shifter go directly into the top of the tranny? If not make sure the linkage is not hanging up somewhere. I'll help if I can. Thanks..................DB.

Car wont go in 1,2, or d but will go in r

I had this happen to me last year on my 98 contour se. i was at a red light, in park cuz it was acting wierd. i put it into drive when the light was green, and it just sounded like it was in neutral. first second and drive all sounded like neutral but reverse worked so i reversed across 3 lanes of traffic. turns out, its cuz my transmission busted and it was cheapest to get a new one, which is nice in the long run cuz now my car beats mustangs (some) when i race my friends lol. but thats bad news for u if u have the same issue, because u gotta drop a couple thousand bucks for a new transmission, good luck to you. more questions - just email me nicarlson@hotmail.com id be glad to help.
