Question about 2000 Ford Contour
Have the system checked for fault codes, you can have Aamco transmission diagnose this for free, which is what i suggest, but as a 35 year Ford dealer tech I really suspect the transmission has failed due to a valve body problem or leak in the fluid passages or a failed fluid pressure pump.

Hi,
You have a problem with either the Transmission speed sensor or the shift position sensor, I would say the speed sensor.
Get a workshop to check these 2 sensors.
If it was a major problem in the transmision it would be faulty at all times not just intermittant.
Hope this helps, let me know if you need more information.
Thanks
Jason

Hi!!
Take vehicle (if possible) to AutoZone or Checkers for a trouble code scan or borrow a code scanner to see if the computer can tell you about the problem. If no codes show up, I suggest you do the following:
It seems that you have sticky valves or plugged/dirty filter. Service the transmission (change filter and fluid), while you have the trans. pan and filter off, remove the valve body and dip it gasoline while pushing the valves in and out with a non-metal object until they woirk smoothly. Drain the valve body, make sure there is no gas left in, use a blow gun on all the fluid passages to clear them, then pour a little transmission fluid and play with the valves again.
When time to replace fluid, add 1 qt. of Rislone stop slip and leak sealant, that stuff works very good on old trannys.
Good Luck!!
