Question about 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette

4 Answers

I just got my car repaired and I need to get it to pass emmissions now. My service engine light is on but my mechanic said that I have to wait for other things to reset. Does anyone know how to get those reset. He said it is a series of things but did not exactly know the series for this van.

It is called an OBD2 Readiness test, also called a "OBD2 Drive cycle test", if u want the test to take place more quickly here is what u must do.

General Motors (specific) OBD II Drive Cycle Performing a GM OBDII Driving cycle:

  1. Cold Start. In order to be classified as a cold start the engine coolant temperature must be below 122°F (50°C) and within 11°F (6°C) of the ambient air temperature at startup.
Do not leave the key in prior to the cold start or the heated oxygen sensor diagnostic may not run.
  2. Idle. The engine must be run for two and a half minutes with the air conditioner on and rear defroster on. The more electrical load you can apply the better. This will test the O2 heater, Passive Air, Purge "No Flow", Misfire, and - if closed loop is achieved- Fuel Trim.
  3. Accelerate. Turn off the air conditioner and all the other loads and apply half throttle until 55mph (88km/hr) is reached. During this time the Misfire, Fuel Trim, and Purge Flow diagnostics will be performed.
  4. Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 55mph (88km/hr) for 3 minutes. During this time the O2 response, air Intrusive, EGR, Purge, Misfire, and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.
  5. Decelerate. Let off the accelerator pedal. Do not shift, touch the brake or clutch. It is important to let the vehicle coast along gradually slowing down to 20 mph (32km/hr). During this time the EGR, Purge and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.
  6. Accelerate. Accelerate at 3/4 throttle until 55-60mph (88-96 km/hr). This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 3.
  7. Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 55mph (88km/hr) for five minutes. During this time, in addition to the diagnostics performed in step 4, the catalyst monitor diagnostics will be performed. If the catalyst is marginal or the battery has been disconnected, it may take 5 complete driving cycles to determine the state of the catalyst.
  8. Decelerate. This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 5. Again, don't press the clutch or brakes or shift gears.

Find another mechanic, the service engine light will reset it self once the issues has been repaired. If there is a Auto Zone in your area or Parts Source, they will scan your Silhouette for the DTC codes that is causing you to have your service engine light to be on. It could be as simple as a bad Gas Cap that needs to be replaced.

Post me back with the DTC codes and we can go from there on to getting your van running 100% again and save you some money.

Than you for using fixya and be safe.

The service light should not be on. He should have cleared the code and if it was fixed, it would not turn the light back on. The monitor may not have run yet, but the light still would not be on.

If the check engine light was on DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's should be stored . If the light was on , disconnecting the battery won't do anything . Diagnostic's need to be done . Sounds like you have no clue , so best advice , take it to a qualified repair shop .

MERCURY MARNER SERVICE EMMISSION LIHT

Have your mechanic check your exhaust out put. There are three things to check: egr valve, oxygen senser(s), if these are good, you have a stopped up catalytic converter(s). Remember your engine must breathe too.

I have a 2001 hyundai sonata, I have a light that is coming on, in the manual it says gas, exhaust light, what is that?

emmission light.
there is a small vapour leak in the fuel sytem of your car.
this doesn`t mean your leaking liquid gas -only a small amount of fuel vapours.
the emmission system of today`s vehicle are very sensitive, and when the car`s computer monitors this, it will display this information thru your dash warning light.
yor car is still safe to drive, but eventually you will have to fix this problem in order to pass a drive -clean -emmission test. See your service repair shop for further diagnostics..

Cant get service engine soon light to stay off to get inspected.

Take your car to an autozone store and have it scanned to determine what the issues are and then have it cleared. THat should turn off the light for a time. Then drive it immediately to be inspected.

Prerunner wont pass smog due to engine service light

Not positive on this so consider only. The o2 sensor is what actually tells everything else what is going on with emmission and everything else adjusts to what info it relays. The o2 is also subjected to extreme temps and cooling cycles. So, instead of spending money on no answer diagnostism give replacement of o3 sensor so consideratio. If you choose to replace, wd40 and let exhaust cool down. Good Luck.
