2 Answers

Why would my 1998 neon expresso buck at speeds of 55 mph or higher also sometimes while it bucks it loses power like no gas is getting to it and then all of a sudden its back for a couple minutes, than it starts all over again. it also revs really high. the bucking is very hard. its been doing this over a year now.

I am having the same problem. I was going to change the fuel filter but the part store says there is none listed. Does this mean I have to replace the pump????

SUMMAIL4ME: wut was the outcome of your Neon issues as far as it acting like its gonna die...I am having the same problem

  • summail4me Sep 27, 2010

i never solved the issue. i've replaced the fuel filter actually its in the pump so i replaced the whole pump. i got all new wires, spark plugs and coil. i also had it scanned for codes. it gives a code for a brake switch. i looked up brake switch and my car has none of the problems that has to deal with. i'm at my wits end with junker. someone mention the mass air flow sensor its a $110 part. debating weather or not to get it since it didnt give any codes for one, so, did you fix yours yet?

Any difference after filter being changed? I'd save money and leave coil, but would do wires and plugs. Make sure you buy Champion spark plugs as noted in manual, or on sticker on underside of hood, or on rad support area. Champions work better in Chrysler/Dodge products.

I forgot to ask if your getting any trouble codes? (check engine light) They will scan for free at most of the Big auto parts stores like Autozone, Pep Boys etc.

Your description sounds more like a torque converter clutch problem. It would explain the poor mileage, having to floor it to go. I suggest having the transmission scanned, looking at the slip speed of the torque converter clutch.

I would really have that exhaust checked again, as well as have mechanic put fuel pressure gauge on & drive it up to that speed and see what happens fuel pressure wise. With exhaust, it's not only cat converter that could be causing reduced flow.
