For years the check engine light has been on on 2000 cabrio convertible. It has failed inspections in the past and have spent hundreds trying to find the problem. Never have been able to and the check engine light never goes off. and then it will pass, with it still on. it just failed again this year and need to know whats causing this and a solution, Not even the vw garage could ever fix it. Any suggestions

This is impossible to tell. You haven't said what the code is. If the check engine light is on the computer has detected a problem and thrown a code.

1582 is likely a vacuum leak somewhere and possibly throttle body that is dirty. 1426 can be a couple of things one of which is a check valve at the fuel tank and or a cracked rubber hose from the tank to the evap. or a bad evap. They are made out of plastic and can and do crack. If the dealer cant fix this then they are really incompetent. The time to get this fixed was under warranty. Also the sensors associated with both those lights should be checked and or replaced. I prefer to test sensors rather then just randomly replace them. The car will normally run fine with these codes because it can adapt. the 1582 code can mess up the mixture though causing it to fail emissions. This is where having a second vehicle is nice. you can take the time to go over each system very carefully till you find the problem. use a vacuum pump and check the hoses and check valves etc. it can be fixed but just because some flunky passed a ASE certification does not mean he understands the physics of how it all works. Too many dealers have such mechanics, they can change a tire but have no idea how to use a scope to figure out the tough ones. They would rather sell you a new car. Find a rundown shop somewhere and ask the mechanic how he would go about fixing your problem. If he can give a good process that includes the tank the vac lines and plastic connectors and sensor testing then you probably have a good one.

What can I do to past auto inspection?

Because of lack of information (data) about your inspection, it is hard to tell where the failure is.
For more information about changing catalytic converter. The price can be 10 times different.
The highest quota I got was over $1400 (the golden smog station), the lowest was below $200 (found by state division where I asked for compensation due to old car -- since I cannot go there directly, I paid $325 fro an agent to do it). Dealer was asking for $700.
After changed a home genie catalytic converter, which worked better then the original manufactured till car is dead in another 10 years, I brought it back to the golden smog station for free re-test. The technician did not believe that is a new, and inspected to verify that is true.
This homegenie catalytic converter passed a number of smog tests till car is dead after another 10 years.
BTW, the original manufactured catalytic converter failed on the very first smog check at year 6 or 7 after can was bought, so it is possible you had a failure catalytic converter, but inspection result may tell.

How to tell whats wrong with my catalytic converter

If the test says it the issue.. you have no choice but to replace it.. (you could cut it apart and clean it out, then reweld it)..BUT if the inspectors see it,, you are IN BIG TROUBLE!!

If i cut the cattilac converter off will it make the car run bad

It may increase your horse power minimally, but it will probably produce a check engine light that will cause you to fail inspection in some states.

I have an 02 montana. No check engine light is on but it failed inspection with a code po135. what is the code and what are my solutions?

It's an oxygen sensor issue. Most cars these days have 2 oxygen sensors. 1 "upstream" of converter and 1 downstream. They compare exhaust before and after the converter. When their measurements equal each other, means converter is not functioning (exhaust is same in & out) and not always triggering dash lights. Either you have a bad sensor or your converter is and, is why you didn't pass inspection.

The check engine light is on. What do I do?

There could be a hundred causes for a check engine light. First step is to hook up a computer scan tool and see what codes the computer has. The next step depends on the codes. You don't have any other choices when it comes to inspectors.

I have had my 2001 x5 in the shop for a service engine light . First they replaced the thermostat, then the oxygen sensors now they are telling me both catalytic converters are bad. The vehicle has just...

Not enough info, but go to another garage and do not tell them what the other shop said.

The only thing that could usually make both converters fail at the same time would be if they were exposed to something bad, like antifreeze from a bad head gasket, burning oil, or some kind of fuel additive that harms converters and O2 Sensors..

Check engine light/torque converter

Blades inside a torque converter do "open and close" based on engine rpm, and they may not be working correctly. However, they should have given you the error code (DTC) which would tell you exactly what was going on. In any case, if you have a torque converter internal problem, it is almost always necessary to replace it as it does not contain any serviceable parts. If it has been a very long time since the transmission fluid was replaced, I would try that first because if you don't, a serious transmission failure is on the horizon.
