Question about 1994 Volkswagen Passat
When ever the check engine light comes on it is indicating a fault has occurred in the electronic engine control system, when this light is on a fault code is set, this is called an "OBD2" fault code, knowing what code was set in the memory of the engine control computer (called the PCM) is the very first step in finding which system in the engine is causing the problem, u can get the code(s) read for free by any Kragen or Autozone or Orileys auto parts store, there are over 200 possible codes so guessing isn't really an option and can lead to allot of money spent on guessing very fast and still no getting the problem repaired. I have 35 years experience in this type of work and there is no other way to do this, so get the tests run, u will most likely end up at the dealer because the fix often requires special testing and highly skilled techs with factory manuals

Thanks for using FixYa. The check engine light is on because ECM (Control Module) detected a fault with your car's system. ECM has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" light to tell you that there is a problem and your car needs to be looked at. You'll need to get the codes checked from a nearby dealer/mechanic. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.
