You can use any oil you want as long as they meet the API rating the weights are abit more important as you want to use a thinner oil at the running temp of the motor so changing the oil interval by a third would be my suggestion

Can i use 5 w 20 oil in my 2003 pt cruiser?

trust synthetic oils like 10w 40 or 5w 60, the reason why because synthetic operates from 80 to 90 degrees as normal operating temp therefore gives engine power by improving hydraulic tarpet performance. other oils form colestrol at 45 degrees thereby blocking oil galaries causing bearing knock

Smell oil when starting engine 2003 chrysler p t cruiser for a moment

Depeneding on your mileage.....

Could be an oil leak onto the engine burning off, or it could be you have some valve seals that are leaking alittle bit of oil int the cylnders while the engine sits.

If its only for a moment then gone, and none present after car is running no need to worry

Is there any difference between '01 and '03 engine?

what you need is a Hollander book that tells you what the difference is in the engines there may be just little diff and it will tell you what you can swap .
and most salvage yard have these books and dont charge to look it up for you.
and dont let someone guess and say yes and then you have to go back and change so importaint part.
