Defective coolant temperature sensor if it reads hot as soon as you start the engine. Check the wiring before replacing. The gauge itself can also be bad but not likely. The temperature sensor will look like this. The temperture gauge does not work. It is always - 52bbcec.png

How can you tell if your temperture sensor is bad?

locate the temp sensor and disconnect it from the electrical connector. This should drop the gauge to zero. if this doesn't happen then you have a short in the circuit. if gauge drops, then replace sensor

Temperture gauge tacks out when turn ignition switch

The temperature sending unit is probably bad. This will cause the circuit to ground out and send the needle all the way to hot. You can unplug the sending unit(it will be on the block near the radiator hose) and see if it still does it. If it does it's the sending unit.

Most likely the heat sensor.
Ensure you replace the gauge sensor with the correct type to suit your gauge.
(dont confused it with the overtemp alarm switch sensor).
Check you've got the right sensor by shorting it out to frame/ground and observing the gauge movement.

Remove the temp sensor wire with key in on position to see if it still goes to hot position If it does you have a short in the sender wire and if it drops to not reading the sensor is probably faulty
