Yes, unfortunately this engine IS an interferance engine. The only way to tell if anything is bent is to install a new belt and see how it runs or perform a compression test. Let me know if you need anything else.

Timing belt breaks does it hurt the valves

kia engines are classified as intereference engine which indicates that if the belt breaks there is a high possibility of bent valves
it als o means that if the belt is off and you have not released the valve clearance to maximum the turning the engine over will bend valves

If time belt breaks does it hurt the valves on

Yes, it bends them. The valves stay still, some will be in the open (down position) and the piston comes up and bashes them.

If the timing belt is easy to replace, you can try it. If not, you might as well remove the head and check, clean the combustion chambers, clean and lap the valves whilst you have it stripped down. Get yourself a workshop manual.

Is the head on the sportage an interference head the timing belt broke and i want to know if it could bend valvel?

Yes, the 2.0L engine is an interference type engine and will bend valves should the belt break. The recommended belt change interval is 60,000 miles for Federal emission vehicles and 105,000 miles for California emission vehicles. I prefer to change most timing belts at the low end of the recommended interval just to be on the safe side as the repairs can be quite expensive. Good luck, hope this helps!

I have a 2001 Kia sportage, the dealer said it was a late model so he said it is a 2002. The timing belt broke and I can not get it to run smooth again. It will start but has no compression.

2.0 is a non clearance motor. When the timing belt slips the piston comes up and hits the valves and bends them. Unfortunately due to the belt teeth stripped out and the crankshaft continuing to turn when the cam did not turn left the valves open and the piston bent the valves. You will have to remove the cylinder head and check the cylinder head if it needs surfaced and do a valve job on the head and replace any valves that are bent. Make sure the piston is not damaged (hole punched in it from the valve)

Rough idle,no power

There is a lot of things this could be from poor fuel pressure to the timing belt being off a notch, have the timing belt checked quickly,if it has jumped,it needs to be changed, for if it breaks,or jumps time anymore it will bend the engine valves in the head, costly too, have the fuel pressure checked, and all the boots, coils, and spark plugs.

99 kia sportage 2.0 ltr motor will idle but wont acellerate

You need to pull the codes to see what the codes are,it will narrow the problem down,it can be a bad throttle position sensor,or a mass air flow sensor,or the timing belt could have jumped a notch, and if the timing belt breaks,it will bend engine valves and cost a lot of money,so have it checked.

In a 2001 2liter Kia the timing belt broke.. Can I just replace it or do I need to have the valves checked first.? I heard that Kia fixed that problem of bending valves in this model.

Although a KIA manual will state that this is an interference engine, it is not. I know because I have replaced a shredded timing belt on my used 2000 Sportage to take it home and it ran great. Just recently, the timing idler pulley bolt broke while I was driving causing the belt to come off. I replaced the tensioner pulley and drilled out and re-tapped the idler bolt hole and installed the new idler and the belt (it was only 2 months old at the time) and it runs great again. THESE ARE NOT INTERFERENCE ENGINES!!!! you don't have to tear down the top end of the engine to inspect for any damage and it is very simple to install a timing belt on this motor as long as it is done properly.

1998 kia sportage. changed timing belt. now no compression.

WOW - DID THE BELT BREAK WHILE IT WAS RUNNING IF SO THE VALVES ARE BEND THATS WHY YOU HAVE NO COMPRESSION.
IF YOU HAD THE BELT REPLACED AND THEY DON'T HAVE THE TIMING MARKS RIGHT YOU CAN STILL BEND THE VALVES.
9 TIMES OUT OF 10 THE DAMAGE IS JUST TO THE VALVES AND NOT THE HEAD OR ENGINE. BUT IF YOU HAVE TO PULL THE HEAD MY ADVISE IS TO HAVE THE HEAD CHECKED FOR CNY CRACKS

Timing belt broke

Yes it is almost impossible not to bend the valves when the timing belt breaks while going down the road. Also there could have punctured the pistons or scared them too. Being its a 4 cyl then everything is aluminum and there is damage almost guarented.

I hope you find this helpful.
