Question about Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

I have a 2001 pontiac sunfire that the battery keeps draining when it is sitting. I have had the battery checked a couple times now, had the negative wire changed. The auto parts store said it was my starter. I would think it was my alternator, not my starter. Am at a loss can you help me figure this out?

You've probabally got something else light or a radio draining the battery overnight.Check if every thing getting off after to turn the ignition off. Stater draining the battery is very very rare.In most cases its impossible. But yes alternator can drain battery.Actually when the car is running at that time the charge of the battery gets used. But its the alternator which keeps the battery charged only when car is running. But if the alternator is weak or faulty then it will not charge the battery while running. And this might be draining the battery while its sitting. Its most probably the alternator. But before replacing alternator get it checked by any other mechanic. If the alternator is checked ok.Then there is any wire short in the car.So any of the light in the car is remaining on even if you turn the car key to off.So check the short in wirings. But if wirings also checked ok then the other possibility is to check the ignition switch and ignition lock.If this ignition parts are internally cracked a bit then this must not letting the car to get completely off.You must be turning the key towards off but actually its not turning completely off and due to this the battery drains out as the car is actually on not off. So get all this possibilities checked out.Any of this possibility is faulty.Proper checking will help to locate the faulty part.
Thanks. keep updated for any more can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Need information on 2000 Pontiac Sunfire charging system

To check the alternator on GM's. Start the car, pull the negative post off the battery. If the car dies, the alternator is bad. If it stays running. Check and/or replace the battery. Also check and clean or replace badly corroded wires from the battery.

2003 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2 OHC rotates but won't

TDC is after the number one piston comes up on the compression stroke. So if you take the valve cover off, you should be able to watch the intake valve and tell where the cam timing is as the piston comes up. Keep in mind if cam timing is off you won't have much if any compression on most cylinders.

Replacing sending unit in float tank of 2003 Pontiac Sunfire

HI. please remove the negative battery post before you being this repair. Make sure you have depressurized the tank as well.

Replace the negative battery post after you have finished the sending unit repair.

The cpu will automatically reset once the negative battery post is reattached and the engine fuel pressure builds back up to its normal pressure.

Please rate and have a great day:)
