The lock cylinder where the key goes in, does not affect your isssue. The ignition switch with the electrical connections is what you need to replace.

Vw jetta glx vr6 key turns in ignition, but nothing happens

The first thing I would check is the starter motor fuse and relay, but the lights staying on is weird. Perhaps the ignition key switch is defective. That could be caused by many things including wear and tear / moisture / insects, especially if the car is old and you are living in a warm and humid climate.

yes very much possible the ignition switch is getting Short so its causing the issue.Check the voltage at ignition switch. The power wire to the ignition switch harness are connected to battery and will give 12 volts. If there is no voltage then its loose connection. If there is short the voltage will differ. ---------thanks.Helpmech.

1998 328i ignition key won't turn to crank the engine. Only the miles show. Also the steering wheel is locked. Help.

Sometimes the ignition switch can wear out to where you cannot turn it anymore. And you cannot turn the steering wheel without the ignition turned on. The first thing I would do it wiggle the steering wheel back and forth while turning the ignition. If this does not work you will have to replace your ignition switch.

The key doesnt work it only moves in the lock what can I do?

If it moves freely with no spring resistance then the pin extension on the ignition barrel that turns the ignition switch is most likely broken and the barrel and key will have to be replaced. If there is spring resistance and the ignition lights come on when you switch on the ignition but it does not crank then it will be the ignition switch that is faulty and this will have to be replaced.

Basically you need two things (electrically) to start and run the car. First, the ignition must be ON, then you need to crank the engine (START). When you cross the solenoid, you need the ignition turned on in order for the car to keep running. Have you checked to see that you have +12volts on the ignition switch - do you instruments come on, etc. Same for the start circuit. THis sounds like and ignition switch problem or the circuits feeding the switch.

The ignition key turns like normal but it does not do anything. I replaced the ignition switch and it does the same thing. When you turn the key it is like it freely turns like the tumblers are not turning

Take the switch back out and carefully inspect the mechanics of its operation. On my Focus, the lock turns a part in the back that operates the ignition. The Taurus may be different, but it still has to turn the ignition. It sounds like there is some kind of trouble with the engagement. Good Luck.
